Chairman and Standing Committee members of the Convocation are actively engaged in university initiatives.

Chairman Mr Clovis Lau was invited to serve on the 2014 selection panel for the Alumni Civility Hall JUMP Scholarships chaired by Alumni Civility Hall Residence Master Dr Ma Ka-fai on 25 April. The scholarships were designed to recognise students who have achieved excellent academic performance and demonstrated outstanding contribution to the Alumni Civility Hall. In his capacity as a Council member, Mr Lau also attended a Council meeting on 27 March and a meeting convened by the Advisory Committee on Graduate Employment under the Council on 30 April to discuss student and graduate employment issues.

Invited by the Chairman, Vice-Chairmen Mr William Khoo joined the 2nd meeting of the University’s 30th Anniversary Sub-committee on Fund-raising and Alumni Programmes on 8 April and Mr Joseph Tsoi at the 1st meeting for CityU Homecoming Gala 2014, a biennial signature alumni event, serving as Deputy Chairman of the Organising Committee which was attended by alumni association leaders and chaired by Associate Vice-President (Alumni Relations) Ms Kathy Chan.

The Convocation is devoted to strengthening ties with alumni bodies of CityU.

Invited by CityU EMBA Association, Convocation Chairman Mr Clovis Lau and Vice-Chairman Mr Joseph Tsoi attended its annual dinner on 26 April. They treasured the opportunity to meet over 120 EMBA alumni, students, University colleagues and guests.

The Convocation received a Certificate of Appreciation in recognition of its dedicated support for the City-Youth Empowerment Project (CYEP). Vice-Chairman, Mr Cedric Cheng, received the accolade on behalf of the Convocation at the CYEP’s annual Happy Carnival organised by the Department of Applied Social Studies on 26 April. Standing Committee member Mr Gabriel Ho also joined this joyous festive together with alumni volunteers who served as mentors for the CYEP’s Career Workshop held in early March. The Convocation will continue to mobilize fellow alumni to support our community and society.

Convocation shares the same aspirations of other community members to support people in need through social service.

Led by three experienced alumni hiking leaders, namely Miss Llicia Chang, Mr Savio Wong and Miss Flora Leung (also Convocation Standing Committee member), some 20 alumni and friends had a great time on 27 April over a 2.5-hour hiking activity at the Lung Yeuk Tau Trail organised by the CityU Convocation. Participants included alumni from the mainland and Hong Kong as well as Convocation Vice-Chairman Mr Joseph Tsoi and Standing Committee member Mr Billy Li. They enjoyed the scenic views and learnt the historical landmarks introduced by the hiking leaders along the route under the sunny weather with warm breeze. The trail was filled with laughter and joy of CityU hikers.

Fellow alumni heartily thanked the Convocation for arranging the healthy walk and treasured the opportunity to make new friends and strengthen the bonds amongst themselves. Click here to recall the happy moments.

Convocation unites fellow alumni to strengthen the bonds with each other.

The CityU Convocation will celebrate its milestone at the inauguration ceremony for the Fourth Standing Committee (SC) in the evening of 18 July 2014 (Friday) on campus.

Members of the CityU Convocation, including all graduates, Emeritus Professors and honorary award holders of the University, are cordially invited to join the ceremony and share the aspirations of the Fourth SC members on serving the University. It will also be a great opportunity for CityU community members to get together and learn University and alumni updates.

The Fourth SC look forward to meeting you and celebrating this special occasion together! Invitation will be sent to Convocation members shortly.

The Convocation would like to thank alumni for joining the CityU 30th Anniversary Joint Concert held on 6 April.

The Convocation and the Alumni Relations Office jointly presented a number of complimentary tickets to alumni via online promotion. Overwhelming response was received and all complimentary tickets had been claimed within a short while. The concert, organised by the 30th Anniversary Sub-committee on Student Programmes of which Convocation Chairman Mr Clovis Lau is one of the members, featured a wide array of performances and offered an opportunity to the CityU community to get together and embrace the dreams with loved ones!

The Convocation continued to support the CityU Delegation for Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon after the race day by attending the Reunion Dinner and Prize Presentation Ceremony which was held in the evening of 22 March. Convocation Vice-Chairmen Mr William Khoo and Mr Joseph Tsoi, Standing Committee members Mr Aaron Hui and Miss Ywing Yeung attended the event and greeted with CityU runners, alumni volunteers, student supporters and University representatives. They extended their warmest congratulations to CityU runners for their outstanding performance in this year’s Marathon, and reminisced with participants about the race on which more than 1,200 athletes joined the Delegation.


Convocation showcases its full support to the University of promoting sports initiative.

On behalf of the Convocation, Vice-Chairman Mr Cedric Cheng joined Professor Anthony Cheung Bing-leung, Secretary for Transport and Housing of the HKSAR Government; Professor Way Kuo, CityU President; Professor Arthur Ellis, CityU Provost and Professor Horace Ip, CityU Vice-President (Student Affairs) to officiate at the opening ceremony of the 2014 CityU Discovery Festival on 3 March. This annual initiative showcased University’s strengths in discovery and innovation.

On the same occasion was the presentation of the 2013/14 Teaching Excellence Awards to three exemplary teachers who have contributed to raising the quality of teaching at CityU. The award recipients were Dr Elaine Au Liu Suk-ching, Associate Professor in the Department of Applied Social Studies; Mr Scott Hessels, Associate Professor in the School of Creative Media, and Dr Samson Young Kar-fai, Assistant Professor in the School of Creative Media. Convocation Immediate Past Chairman Miss Karmen Chan served on the Selection Panel comprising faculty, teaching grade staff, student, alumni, and administration representatives. The Panel was chaired by Professor Christian Wagner, Associate Provost (Quality Assurance).

Nearly 80 participants including ethnic youths from secondary schools, alumni and student volunteers joined the “City-Youth Empowerment Project – Career Workshop for Ethnic Minority Youth”, a social service programme organised by the Department of Applied Social Studies on campus on 2 March.

The Convocation continued to serve as “Supporting Unit” of the workshop for the 2nd year and it successfully recruited dedicated alumni volunteers to serve as mentors. Convocation Vice-Chairmen Mr Cedric Cheng, Mr William Khoo and Mr Joseph Tsoi, and Standing Committee members Mr Gabriel Ho, Miss Flora Leung, Miss Vera Kong, Mr Billy Li and Miss Ywing Yeung joined the workshop and spent a meaningful Sunday with the ethnic youths who treasured the learning opportunity from alumni and student volunteers. The students enthusiastically took part in various hands-on training including group discussions and mock interviews, and SC members were impressed by their remarkable performance and positive learning attitude.

The CityU Convocation would like to extend its heartfelt thanks to alumni who participated in the workshop, in particular to those who supported for the second time!

Some 10 Standing Committee (SC) members of the CityU Convocation attended a welcome dinner on 19 March jointly hosted by the Council Chairman Mr Herman Hu and the President Professor Way Kuo. At the dinner, the SC members exchanged views on University development, shared their old days at CityU and expressed their aspirations for serving the SC with University representatives including Professor Roderick Wong, Vice-President (Development and External Relations) and Ms Kathy Chan, Associate Vice-President (Alumni Relations).

Mr Herman Hu and Professor Way Kuo delivered heartfelt gratitude to members of the 3rd and 4th SC for their continuous contribution and support to the University. On behalf of the SC members, Convocation Chairman Mr Clovis Lau shared the upcoming endeavors that aim at uniting fellow alumni community to support University development. SC members suggested a number of initiatives to strengthen relationship among the CityU community and promote the core values of the University.


SC members and University representatives have a fruitful sharing.


On behalf of the University, Professor Roderick Wong shows his appreciation to Miss Karmen Chan, SC member (Immediate Past Chairman), for her continuous support to the University and leadership in the Convocation during her term of 2010-2013.
