Convocation deepens ties
Helping the community fight Covid-19

The Convocation demonstrated its caring spirit by initiating a series of social service endeavours in response to the Covid-19 pandemic. Its Standing Committee raised funds and mobilised alumni volunteers to distribute anti-virus protective products to people in need in the community, through over 20 social welfare organisations.

Webinar links up with world of finance

Providing useful tips on managing investment tools.


Two top finance experts shared their wisdom on financial markets and offered tips on managing investment tools in a webinar co-presented by the Convocation and Eminence Society on 10 November 2020. CityU alumna Ms Agnes Wu (third left), a well-known finance commentator, and Mr Ken Lo (third right), an expert in corporate banking, led the two virtual sessions for some 140 alumni.

Mr Robert Lui (centre), Chairman of the Convocation and Vice-Chairman of the Eminence Society, chaired the talk, which provided a valuable interactive platform to exchange knowledge and strengthen bonds among alumni.

Cultural heritage tour

The Convocation organised an online guided tour on 26 November 2020 for alumni to explore the cultural heritage and landscape of Yau Ma Tei. The virtual expedition was conducted by MA Chinese graduate Mr George Wan (second right), and facilitated by Standing Committee member Ms Ywing Yeung (second left). Through immersive 360° photographs taken specially for this virtual tour, Mr Wan informatively described the district’s urban landscape and architecture from both historical and cultural perspectives.

Eminence Society celebrates 10th
anniversary with fundraising campaign

The Eminence Society (ES), which brings together senior alumni to contribute to CityU development through their resources, networks, and expertise, marked its 10th anniversary with the launch of a fundraising campaign for the University. The fundraising drive, organised with the support of the Alumni Relations Office, will use donations from members to apply for the Hong Kong government’s matching grants, enabling the University to receive additional funding towards the pursuit of excellence. The campaign runs until 2022, along with CityU’s first-ever largest fundraising initiative “United, We Soar”, which had commenced in 2014 and launched its public phase in December 2020.

In appreciation of the collective contribution from ES members, the University will name a major facility after the Society, together with the following acknowledgements for individual donors as appropriate:

Activity-filled year for Executive MBA (Chinese) Alumni Association

The second Executive Committee of CityU EMBA (Chinese) Alumni Association held its first meeting in Chengdu on 18 July 2020. Chairman Mr Wang Dan (bottom, first row fifth right) led the meeting, with around 70 people in attendance. Representatives from the Alumni Relations Office, College of Business, and EMBA (Chinese) Programme also joined the meeting online. The Executive Committee subsequently organised various events that successfully strengthened alumni networks, including company visits, trip to different cities, and reunions. An opening ceremony for the Association’s new venue for alumni activities at CityU Shenzhen Research Institute also took place on 24 October 2020.

Management Science insights

The Alumni Association of Management Sciences organised a day of well-received activities attended by close to 100 alumni, students, and staff on 19 January 2020. A seminar introducing Python programming language by faculty member Dr Gavin Feng took place in the morning, followed by a Lunch & Learn event hosted by Dr Agnes Law, from the Hong Kong government’s Census and Statistics Department and Mr Ricky Lo, of Citibank. The afternoon featured alumni sharing on the management trainee programme by Mr Phil Lo, Global Graduate Trainee at HSBC, and Ms Bertha Sung, previously a Manulife Management Trainee.

BIS support amid the pandemic

With face masks in short supply in the early days of the Covid-19 pandemic, CityU Business Information Systems (BIS) Alumni Association received 20,000 masks donated by its alumni. The masks were distributed to its fellow alumni and students in March 2020.

Sharing the joy of Pastel Nagomi Art

Social Work Alumni Association arranged an experiential workshop on Pastel Nagomi Art, a Japanese form of art healing, on 3 July 2020. The workshop targeted all ages and was open to participants even without an art background.

SEE Alumni Association forms new Exco

The new Executive Committee of CityU Alumni Association of School of Energy and Environment (SEE) was formed on 31 May 2020, led by Chairwoman Ms Yannick Li. The Association pledged to further strengthen connections among the School’s alumni community.

School of Law networking and reunion event

The Alumni Association of the School of Law held a lively Reunion Drinks gathering for around 80 alumni, students, and staff at The Helena May on 10 January 2020. The networking event gave students the opportunity to meet alumni professionals in the legal field and enabled alumni to receive updates from University representatives of the School of Law and Alumni Relations Office.

Shanghai celebration for CityU-Fudan DBA programme

CityU-FudanU DBA Alumni Chapter held its annual dinner cum 10th anniversary of the CityU-FudanU Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) programme in Shanghai on 26 December 2020. The occasion gathered alumni, students, and representatives from both universities in person and via real-time interaction. ARO sent warm wishes and thanked the chapter for strengthening alumni networks.

Graduands join ambassadorial family

Some 80 participants gathered for an online Career Talk and Welcome Event for CityU Class Liaison Ambassadors on 25 April 2020. During the talk, organised by the Alumni Relations Office, five alumni leaders (below) shared information on job market trends and offered advice to CityU graduands as they prepared to embark on their career journeys. Liaison Ambassadors also mobilised classmates to make a class gift to support University development.
