United for CityU fundraising campaign
The public phase of CityU’s 10-year “United, We Soar” fundraising campaign was launched in December 2020. The comprehensive drive seeks to boost the University’s fundraising capabilities and provide sustained support for four key areas: strategic development, academic and research excellence, student development, and capital projects. Its multiple objectives allow supporters to help the University achieve its goals, and to contribute to the pursuit of excellence in higher education, as well as to showcase CityU’s achievements over the years to the community.
CityU launched HK Tech 300, a flagship innovation and entrepreneurship programme, in March 2021. With a theme of “Venture Beyond Boundaries”, the enterprising HK$500 million programme is seeking to support the establishment of 300 start-ups by CityU students, alumni, research staff, and people using CityU technology or intellectual property in the next three years and build the largest university-based entrepreneurship programme in Asia.
A ceremony to mark the start of work on the superstructure of the Jockey Club One Health Tower took place at CityU in March 2021. Equipped with first-class facilities, the Tower signifies a new milestone in CityU’s mission to promote multidisciplinary collaboration that can enhance the health of humans, animals, and the environment under the One Health paradigm.
Embracing online teaching
When Covid-19 led to the suspension of face-to-face classes last year, CityU immediately responded by launching CityU-Learning, a campus-wide, real-time, online platform. The creative platform has now evolved into CityU-Learning 2.0, incorporating ideas such as virtual reality technology for conducting virtual experiments.
Professor Raymond Chan, Vice-President (Student Affairs) and Chair Professor, Department of Mathematics, has been elected Fellow of the American Mathematical Society, for his contributions to computational mathematics.
Professor Ron Chen, Chair Professor, Department of Electrical Engineering, has been ranked No.1 in Hong Kong and Asia, No.4 among Chinese scholars, and No.16 on the World’s Top 1000 Scientist List, according to Guide2Research’s 2020 (6th edition) Top Scientists Ranking for Computer Science and Electronics.
Professor Joe Qin, Chair Professor and Dean of the School of Data Science, and Director of the Hong Kong Institute for Data Science, has been elected a Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors. The honour is the highest professional distinction accorded to academic inventors who achieve a tangible impact on the quality of life, economic development, and welfare of society.
Professor Jeffrey Shaw, Yeung Kin Man Chair Professor of Media Art, School of Creative Media, has been honoured with the 2020 ACM SIGGRAPH Distinguished Artist Award for Lifetime Achievement in Digital Art. He was recognised as a “singular visionary and pioneer in the creation of interactive and immersive media art”.
Professor Zhang Hua, Herman Hu Chair Professor of Nanomaterials, Department of Chemistry, has been elected a Foreign Fellow of the European Academy of Sciences, in recognition of his highly interdisciplinary research that has many promising applications in catalysis, clean energy, (opto-) electronic devices, etc.
CityU conferred 2019 Honorary Doctorates on Professor Michael I. Kotlikoff and Dr the Honourable Edward Leong, GBM, GBS, JP, and 2020 Honorary Doctorates on Mr Harry Banga, Mr Norman Chan, GBS, and Mr Wong Chun-hong, BBS, in October 2020, in recognition of their contributions to education and society.
A HK$2 million donation from the Ng Teng Fong Charitable Foundation will fund the establishment of the Kiki Hung Scholarship in memory of the late alumna from the Department of Linguistics and Translation and in appreciation of her exemplary personal qualities, including a positive mind and great perseverance in the face of difficulties.
The College of Science announced three new undergraduate degree programmes to meet society’s evolving demand for professional skills. The programmes comprise a Bachelor of Science with an option in Global Research Enrichment and Technopreneurship, a law–mathematics double degree, and joint degree programmes in partnership with the University of Edinburgh and University of Manchester in the UK. The double degree is the first of its kind offered by a university in Hong Kong.

The Greater Bay Area Joint Laboratory of Big Data Imaging and Communications has been established by the Department of Electrical Engineering and the State Key Laboratory of Terahertz and Millimeter Waves at CityU. With a research focus on big data imaging and wireless communications applications, the Joint Lab aims to promote a new generation of information technology and contribute to the advancement of Guangdong and Hong Kong as an international innovation and technology hub.
Twelve faculty members were recognised by the Research Grants Council (RGC) for their distinguished research achievements and significant contributions to higher education at an awards ceremony in November 2020. Accolades were presented under five RGC schemes, while Professor Yang Tong, Chair Professor of Mathematics, was named a member of the first cohort of RGC Senior Research Fellows.
