Annual General Meetings

The Convocation’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) was convened on 25 June 2021, after the AGM scheduled in 2020 had to be postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. At the meeting, Mr Robert Lui, Chairman of the Standing Committee, reported on the Convocation’s endeavours in 2020 and its facilitation of the alumni network to assist University development, volunteer service programmes and online events. Such activities took place despite the challenges presented by the pandemic, cultivating a great spirit of camaraderie. Mr Lui highlighted accomplishments in 2021 at the final AGM of his term on 7 December 2021.

With the Convocation’s Seventh Standing Committee completing its tenure, nominations for the Eighth Standing Committee were called for in October 2021. Sixteen former and new members were elected for a two-year term from 2022-23.

Building parental understanding of younger generation

A Convocation webinar on early childhood education took place on 27 February 2021, facilitated by Standing Committee member Ms Ywing Yeung. During the webinar, Ms Yuki Wong, a registered social worker and CityU alumna, shared tips on regulating children’s emotions and developing their emotional intelligence, helping participants to learn how to be patient, empathetic, and listen attentively to their children.

Sharing Mid-Autumn Festival joy

To boost Mid-Autumn Festival celebrations for seniors in the community, the Convocation coordinated distribution of fruit and daily necessities to the Methodist Church, Hong Kong Yang Memorial Methodist Social Service Sham Shui Po Nursing Home cum Day Care Service on 20 September 2021.

Marathon races forward

The Convocation was delighted to support CityU Delegation runners, including President Way Kuo, and the University cheering team at the Standard Chartered Hong Kong (SCHK) Marathon on 24 October 2021. Meanwhile, the CityU x Mary Rose RunTogether programme, also supported by the Convocation, is enabling alumni volunteers to train students from the special educational needs school for the SCHK Marathon in 2022.

Eminence Society pledges support for the University

The inauguration of the CityU Eminence Society's Sixth Executive Committee (ExCo) and Annual Dinner took place on 23 June 2021. In the presence of University Council Chairman Mr Lester Garson Huang and President Professor Way Kuo, the Society’s new Chairman, Dr Raymond Leung, led ExCo members in pledging their support and commitment to the University and the community. Exploring Chinese culture through photos

Last autumn, Eminence Society members attended an absorbing demonstration forum by photographer Mr Wong Wing-yiu (fourth right), Honorary Life President of the Hong Kong Art of Photography Association, relating the stories behind Chinese festivals through the lens. The event, held at City Hall in Central on 6 November 2021, was officiated by Dr Irene Lau (fourth left), Eminence Society ExCo member and Chairman of Central & Western District Association for Culture and Arts. ExCo member Dr Chau Yiu-chung (second right) also joined the event.

Boosting University advancement

A fundraising campaign to advance CityU’s future is now underway, led by Eminence Society Deputy Chairman Mr Anthony Lam and assisted by the Alumni Relations Office. The drive is in support of research endeavours, strategic initiatives, student development and campus development. Members’ donations will be used to apply for the Hong Kong government’s Research Matching Grant, as appropriate, to enhance CityU’s research capabilities.

Appropriate acknowledgements will be arranged for the Society and individual donors, including:

· Special naming arrangements at University facilities
· Personal life motto displayed in high-traffic areas

Management forum draws industry and academia together on sustainability

An online management forum on the key issue of “Driving Corporate Growth Through Sustainability” was organised by the Department of Management and Department of Management Alumni Association on 28 May 2021, featuring a top line-up of executives and interactive discussion. Special guests sharing their perspectives included: Mr John Tsang, GBM, JP, former Financial Secretary of HKSAR and Senior Advisor of Bowtie Life Insurance Company Limited; Ms Suzanne Cheung, Head of Sustainability of Swire Coca-Cola HK; and Mr Donald Tse, Chairman and Executive Director of Hung Fook Tong Group Holdings Limited. The academic perspective was provided by Dr Ahn Yoojung, CityU Assistant Professor.

Social work alumni stay connected through virtual AGM

The Social Work Alumni Association’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) cum Life and Death Education Workshop took place via Zoom on 7 August 2021. Mr Henry Wong (third right) was re-elected as Chairman and together with the new ExCo will work to further the goals of the Association over the next two years.

Another fruitful year for EMBA (Chinese) Alumni Association

CityU EMBA (Chinese) Alumni Association coordinated a number of well-attended activities over the year, with a study tour of Macau as one of the highlights. The tour was led by Mr Wang Dan, Chairman of the Association, from 4-6 June 2021 for some 60 alumni. During the trip, participants were able to exchange views with Macau officials, visit the Macau University of Science and Technology, and other local corporations.

Later, the Association’s Executive Committee (ExCo) organised its second meeting in Hangzhou on 24 July 2021 to discuss development plans. Around 50 participants attended in person, including the Chairman, Vice-Chairmen, ExCo members and other alumni. In addition, representatives from the College of Business, EMBA (Chinese) programme and Alumni Relations Office joined the meeting online.

A further meeting took place on 16 October 2021 to form the Association’s new ExCo. Some 50 ExCo members, alumni and College of Business programme leaders went to the gathering at CityU Shenzhen Research Institute while representatives from the University, including ARO, attended online. In its video greeting, ARO thanked the association for strengthening alumni bonds.

Eye-opening visit to Museum of Climate Change by DBA Community

CityU Doctor of Business Administration Community (DBAC) went on an informative trip to the Museum of Climate Change on 12 June 2021. At the museum, members learned about the challenges of the climate crisis and shared ideas. Topics included sustainable development goals, sustainability practices in different industries, and people’s approaches to combatting Covid-19 globally.

Career talk builds Management Science ties

An enlightening career talk on how to craft a route to job success was arranged by the Alumni Association of the Department of Management Sciences on 18 September 2021. Some 60 students joined the workshop, with Ms Nora Chan, Senior Investment Associate of Bank of East Asia, Ms Sally Ma, Risk Management at a Big Four accounting firm, Ms Ella Tsang, Executive Trainee, Jardine Matheson, and Mr Roy Tam, HSBC Global Graduate Trainee, taking part as guest speakers. The management science network was strengthened with active participation of alumni and students.

Evocative reunion for Chemistry graduates

Over 20 Chemistry alumni who graduated in 1995 enjoyed a happy evening together on 8 October 2021. The gathering enabled those attending to rekindle friendships and share their memories of CityU.

IS mentors and mentees meet in person

The Opening Ceremony for the Information Systems (IS) Industrial Mentorship Programme on 8 October 2021 proved a special occasion, with around 50 alumni mentors and student mentees meeting for the first time since the Covid-19 pandemic began. The mentorship programme is a departmental initiative to build up a channel for Information Systems alumni and business professionals to share experience and advice with current students.

SEE community helps keep environment clean

The School of Energy and Environment (SEE) Alumni Association organised a hiking-and cleaning-the-environment expedition to Devil’s Peak on 16 May 2021 to enhance bonding and sense of belonging within the SEE community. A group of 38 alumni, students, faculty, and administrative staff, along with their families and friends, joined the activity. They collected bags of rubbish from the popular peaks in east Kowloon.

ARO catches up with alumni leaders

Adhering to Covid-19 social distancing measures, ARO met up with around 40 alumni leaders from the Convocation, CityU Eminence Society and 10 alumni associations on campus to share updates on University development in October 2021. Alumni leaders exchanged ideas with CityU management during the thought-provoking discussions.

BIS network strengthened

During the 2021-22 academic year, Business Information System (BIS) alumni and new students had the opportunity to build ties at a networking event organised by CityU BIS Alumni Association. The upbeat social gathering took place on 26 September 2021.

ARO held an online Welcome Event cum Alumni Sharing for 2021 Class Liaison Ambassadors on 24 April 2021. At the webinar, alumni leaders Mr Chris Jung, Mr Chris Cheng and Mr Alvin Leung (from left to right) offered insights on essential competencies in different fields for today’s challenging job market. They also led mentoring sessions to provide exclusive tips to CityU graduands in preparing for their careers.

Discussing future pathways

Alumni Ambassador Scheme advisors participated in a dynamic workshop on the scheme’s future development on 17 July 2021, facilitated by alumna Ms Julia Tsoi, Design Strategist at EY wavespace™. Those taking part enjoyed spirited discussions on activities and strategies for enhancing alumni volunteers' support in the years ahead.
