Dear all,

We are pleased to share an exciting achievement in accelerating energy innovation, as well as other CityU research breakthroughs in other disciplines, featured in this issue of E-newsletter. An international research team co-led by CityU recently developed a new perovskite solar cell, which achieved record-high efficiency, paving the way for the commercialisation of this promising candidate to replace silicon solar cells. The findings were published in the prestigious journal Science.

Our unwavering dedication to excellence in research and technology has continued to receive support and recognition from Hong Kong and beyond. Nine research projects led by our scholars received grants worth HK$12.81 million in total in the latest round of the Health and Medical Research Fund (HMRF) under the Food and Health Bureau, HKSAR, which is the highest in terms of the number of projects and funding amount that CityU has received from the HMRF in recent years. At Inventions Geneva Evaluation Days 2022, our researchers received tremendous accolades, winning 22 awards, the most among local institutions for two years in a row.

While CityU’s research achievements and innovations are shining on the world stage, we are delighted to see that HK Tech 300 is booming. The first batch of start-ups that received Angel Fund investment from HK Tech 300, our large-scale flagship innovation and entrepreneurship programme, was announced last week. Forty-nine start-ups were selected to receive up to HK$1 million each. The total investment of more than HK$46 million represents our efforts to promote the application of CityU technology and our determination to support our young people in their start-up journey, as well as the whole start-up ecosystem.

I hope you enjoy the read and look forward to sharing more research advances with you soon.

Best wishes,

Michael M Yang
