Two prominent community figures from the social service and media fields discussed how to develop, grow and sustain a rewarding parent-child relationship at an alumni forum on 6 September.

Ms Candy Chea Shuk-mui, a prominent figure in broadcasting, and CityU alumnus Mr Tik Chi-yuen BBS JP, Director of the Hong Kong Institute of Family Education, were the guest speakers at the Forum themed A Rewarding Parenthood: From Communication to Intimacy organised by the Alumni Relations Office (ARO) of CityU. Ms Dilys Chau Suet-fung, recipient of the CityU Distinguished Alumni Award, was the forum facilitator.

At the interactive discussion, the speakers shared their valuable experience and provided practical examples on how to build a rewarding parenthood and maintain a harmonious family amid busy lifestyles. They also noted their observations on recently-emerged ‘monster’ and ‘helicopter’ parents, prince and princess syndromes, and possible ways to avoid the situations. The importance of developing an intimate parent-child relationship through a high emotional quotient was also discussed.

To close the forum, Candy and Chi-yuen encouraged parents to set themselves as a good model for their children, and allow them to go through both good and bad experiences to build resilience.

Following the inspiring forum, ARO held a lucky draw among alumni participants who checked into the Forum using the ARO mobile application. The prizes included a Samsung Galaxy SIII mobile phone sponsored by CityU Eminence Society and two USBs given away by ARO.

President Professor Way Kuo also provided participants with a few University updates, including the news that Professor Liu Zhi-Qiang from the School of Creative Media had won a prestigious teaching excellence award from the University Grants Committee in recognition of his outstanding teaching performance.

A photo gallery of the Forum is available here to recall happy moments.
