Incoming Mainland students and their parents gained their first impressions of CityU on 27 July 2013 when alumni leaders Mr Jeffrey Li [Bsc (Honours) in Surveying (Law Minor)] and Ms Shirley Liu [BBA (Honours) in Accountancy] shared their fruitful experiences at the pre-arrival orientation sessions in Beijing and Shanghai respectively. Organised by the Mainland and External Affairs Office, the sessions gave the students-to-be an insight of university life and how the alumni’s study experiences had benefited their subsequent achievements in their careers. Jeffrey shared that leadership skills and team spirit were critical elements for success and career development, while Shirley highlighted the importance of social network.

The Alumni Relations Office is most grateful to Jeffrey and Shirley as well as other alumni leaders who have helped strengthen the Mainland alumni network and contributed much of their time to the University’s other outreach endeavours there.

Shirley shares tips on building interpersonal relationships, which can be lifelong assets to students, whether for work or study.

A group of CityU alumni in Singapore joined a luncheon hosted by Hong Kong’s Chief Secretary for Administration, Mrs Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor on 31 July 2013. They treasured the opportunity to meet Mrs Lam along with alumni of other universities and members of the Hong Kong community living in Singapore.

As well as briefing her audience on the latest developments in Hong Kong, Mrs Lam encouraged them to contribute to a closer relationship between Hong Kong and Singapore. The lunch gathering was part of Mrs Lam’s official visit to Singapore in which she also met government officials to understand more about Singapore’s population policy.

Convocation is dedicated to bridging communication between the CityU alumni body and the University. As students are the mainstay of the CityU community, Convocation endeavours to promote the best interest of our “alumni-to-be” to the University through an active and continuous engagement with a number of University initiatives designated for students.

In addition to the 30th Anniversary Organizing Committee and Sub-Committee on Fundraising and Alumni Programmes, Convocation has also accepted the invitation to serve on the 30th Anniversary Sub-Committee on Student Programmes. On behalf of Convocation Chairman Miss Karmen Chan, Vice-Chairman Mr Clovis Lau joined its first meeting on 6 August which was convened by Professor Paul Lam, Chairman of the Sub-Committee and also Vice-President (Student Affairs) of the University. Mr Lau exchanged valuable insights with other committee members and helped devising a holistic plan for student programmes throughout the year of 30th anniversary in 2014. Convocation is pleased to help nurturing the students’ commitment to the University and encourage them to pursue multifaceted and dynamic learning experiences at the University.
