Naming ceremony held for student centre

The CityU Student Career Centre has been named the Judith and Gary Cheng Student Career Centre in appreciation of the support and generous donations received from Dr and Mrs Gary Cheng (middle). Dr Cheng is a Doctor of Business Administration graduate, Court member, and former Chairman of CityU Eminence Society. The naming ceremony took place on 14 May 2021. The Centre was previously named in honour of Ms Fan Lee-foon, the late grandmother of distinguished alumnus Dr Andrew Fan, under a term-naming scheme initiated by Dr Fan from 2010. The good practice of giving back to CityU is now being continued for 15 years by Dr and Mrs Cheng.

Growing support from non-local CityU alumni

Along with CityU alumni’s widening presence beyond Hong Kong, the University has seen increasing initiatives from non-local alumni chapters and individuals to contribute voluntary and monetary support to their alma mater, in particular from the mainland. The “United, We Soar” capital campaign has received great support from CityU-FudanU DBA Alumni Chapter and mainland alumni chapter chairpersons, among others. In celebration of the 10th anniversary of the CityU-FudanU DBA programme, CityU-FudanU DBA Alumni Chapter and DBA 2010-2020 Classes made a donation to the University in August 2021. This gift will support student scholarships, research excellence and teaching excellence awards of College of Business. The chapter had its 3rd Executive Committee formed in March 2022. It will continue to support the University in various ways.

300 CityU students nurtured under FANS Awards

A heartfelt salute to Dr Andrew Fan, CityU Distinguished Alumnus and Court member, who launched the FANS Awards in 2007 and has since nurtured close to 300 CityU students through the scheme. The three categories of awards centre around different aspects of student development, focusing on outstanding student leadership, academic improvement for student leaders, and outstanding community service for non-local students. Through such care and ongoing support, future students will also benefit from the scholarships.

Time to fuel future generations

To boost synergy and facilitate alumni-related activities, the ARO team has further stepped up collaboration with colleges, schools and departments, and others within the CityU community. This saw a series of new fundraising appeals launched in 2021 to invite support from alumni of the College of Science and School of Law, as well as scholarship recipients and former student hostel residents. Contributions will advance initiatives for students’ personal growth, campus development, research projects and long-term development of academic units.

CityU has nurtured many outstanding student-athletes over the years, with over 400 athletes in 18 sports events fostered to date. The “We Care for CityU Sports” campaign was launched to nurture the personal, academic and career development of full-time CityU student-athletes by providing additional support through voluntary services and donations.
