From the Editor

In this 2023 edition of City AlumNet, our theme of “Together, We Build Tomorrow” enables us to proudly showcase the CityU community’s concerted efforts and achievements during the transition to a post-pandemic “new normal”. In particular, we highlight the innovative and collaborative spirit that has emerged during these challenging times.

As the “new normal” begins, the University has welcomed on board President Professor Freddy Boey, who took up office in May 2023. In our interview with Professor Boey, he shares his goals to inspire students to become self-motivated learners and to embrace innovation so they can take up leading roles in shaping tomorrow’s world. In addition, he expresses his appreciation for the support of alumni in advancing University development, and highlights the importance of connecting and engaging with the community.

Indeed, “connection” is a core value of alumni relations – exemplified at our CityU Homecoming in March this year. The memorable event was the first large-scale in-person alumni event since the COVID outbreak. My heartfelt gratitude to alumni leaders, groups and participating University units for their enthusiastic support. The bonds forged and smiles of those taking part were truly uplifting.

In further elevating encounters, we talk to alumni leaders from different professions who share their unique experiences and insights from COVID times along with plans to contribute to society after the pandemic. We hope their diverse success stories in turning a crisis into opportunity can spur on fellow alumni.

The issue also looks to the future and the University’s steadfast commitment to providing a world-class teaching and learning environment for students. The drive for ongoing development is clearly shown by the new campus projects pictured on the magazine’s cover: the Jockey Club One Health Tower on the Kowloon Tong Campus; and the Library on CityU Dongguan Campus.

Meanwhile, City AlumNet 2023 is delighted to celebrate the power of unity by including a "seed" in issues delivered locally to emphasise how our alumni community will grow and flourish sturdily through members' nurturing and support.

Together, let’s build a brighter future for CityU by leveraging our collective strength and empowering the next generation of leaders!
