Enrol now for Convocation AGM on 17 December

Convocation members (CityU alumni, Emeritus Professors & Honorary Award Recipients) are invited to attend the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the CityU Convocation to be held at 7:30pm on Friday 17 December at the Wei Hing Theatre on campus. During the meeting, Second Standing Committee members will share Convocation updates and discuss their coming plans with members. To view the AGM notice issued on 17 November and other AGM updates, please go HERE. What is Convocation?

The University Convocation, which comprises all graduates of the University, is a statutory body formed in accordance with the University Ordinance (Statute 10) aiming to strengthen and promote the relationships among members of the Convocation, between the Convocation and the University, and between the University and the general public. It works towards promoting the objectives and activities of the University.

The Chairman and Standing Committee members of the Convocation are elected by and from the members of the Convocation.

鼓點陣陣 敲擊樂壇

黎萬宏(物理及材料科學哲學碩士1999)


『拿獎最重要的是得到了業界的認可,而他們的鼓勵使我更加開心。』談到獲獎,RubberBand的鼓手泥鯭(黎萬宏)如是說。自小學習吉他,泥鯭對音樂一直滿懷熱情。大學時,他加入合唱隊,參加歌唱比賽並獲獎;工作後,他和朋友在工作之餘組樂團。後來他遇到了興趣相投的伙伴,大家決心把這個愛好轉變為事業,成立了RubberBand。 RubberBand近兩年在香港斬獲各大音樂獎項,在華語樂壇也頗具名氣。

泥鯭先後在城大物理及材料科學系取得本科和碩士學位。在城大讀書的經歷也在他的音樂之路上留下印記。

本科時代,泥鯭除了打工兼職賺取零用錢外,還加入了學校合唱隊。恰巧,物理及材料科學學系主任楊教授是合唱團的顧問兼會長。合唱團一向男生稀缺,泥鯭便順利進入合唱團。聖誕節在城大紫區演唱聖誕頌歌,在惠卿劇院表演,已經諸多在其他學校的演出都成為泥鯭大學時代的難忘經歷。在這個時期,泥鯭開始接觸到同樣對音樂富有熱情的人,開始有一些演出機會。歌唱比賽成為他最初的表演機會,更讓他畢生難忘。當時他和兩個同學,再加一個主唱,組成小樂團。那時他們就已經嶄露才華,在歌唱比賽中獲獎。

談及在城大的其他經歷,泥鯭感慨到有位老師的一句話,他受用至今。當時許多同學都習慣於抄寫幻燈片的內容,而在物理學系的張博士的第一堂課上,張博士說道:『若是你明白理解的內容,其實無需記錄。需要記錄的是你的問題。』這對泥鯭之後的求學之路影響頗大。

本科畢業之後,泥鯭繼續留在城大攻讀碩士研究生,繼而畢業,找到工作。但是一路下來,泥鯭一直未曾放棄音樂。無論是一兩個月練習一次,還是為了演出一個星期練習兩次,泥鯭和他的伙伴都對音樂熱情不減。而從愛好到事業的轉折點,則是和一群志同道合的朋友的相遇。泥鯭說到:『組樂團創作,就和創業一樣,不能沒有好的合作夥伴。我們這群人互相依靠,互相承諾,都清楚這不同於玩遊戲。』他當時想,與其打工,不如和朋友作一次嘗試。殊不知,正是由於當初的決定,才有了現在的RubberBand。

現在,RubberBand成為香港音樂界的閃耀之星,而作為其鼓手的泥鯭則時常回饋母校城大。在城大度過六年時光,泥鯭對城大的感情深厚。畢業後,泥鯭也常回母校和昔日在城大相識的朋友相聚。在即將舉辦的校友日上,泥鯭也將傾力演出。他說道:『我更樂意以師兄的身份對學弟學妹傳授經驗。我希望能儘自己的力幫助學校,因為學校真的給了我很多機會。 』我們也祝願泥鯭和他的RubberBand能在音樂的路上越走越遠。

 

泥鯭對母校感情至深,亦飲水思源。他將於12月12 日出席「樂聚城大校友日」,在「樂聚城大音樂會」傾力演出,盼望屆時可與大家會面。

The Engineering Doctorate Society attracted close to 100 participants to its public seminar which featured guest speakers Sunny Chai, Managing Director of Fook Tin Group Holdings Ltd, and  renowned media professional Mr Ng Ming-lam.

Mr Chai, who is a CityU Engineering Doctorate (Engineering Management) candidate, shed light on technology management, while Mr Ng offered insights on social responsibility and crisis management. Participants at the seminar, held on 23 October, were eager to seek advice from the speakers during the Q & A session. The Society aims to organise a public talk once every year.

Finance & Actuarial Science course on offer

CityU community enjoys ‘green’ banquet

More than 2,000 university members including alumni, students and staff joined the annual “CityU Banquet” organised by the Students’ Union on 29 October.  Celebrating the 25th Anniversary of the Students’ Union, the “Carnival to Support Environmental Protection” managed to reduce food waste by 400 kilograms after 107 of the 180 tables volunteered to reduce the number of courses served.

VIP guests included University Pro-Chancellor Dr Norman Leung Nai-pang, Council Chairman The Hon Leung Chun-ying, University President Professor Way Kuo, and Convocation Chairman Ms Karmen Chan Ka-man. Read the University report here.

MBA alumni from Shanghai revisit Alma Mater

Fifteen MBA alumni based in Shanghai showed their care and passion for their alma mater with a special trip to CityU on 19 November. Having gained their professional expertise through the education they received at CityU, the alumni particularly wanted to express their appreciation of the devotion of the teaching staff at the College of Business (CB).

CB arranged a sharing with Assistant Dean of International Programmes and Executive Training Dr Gang Hao, MBA Programme Director Dr YC Chan, Deputy MBA Programme Director Dr Chen Ziguang, and Alumni Relations Manager of ARO Ms Pheony Tsang, where they got University updates, shared experiences and pledged to support University endeavours in Shanghai.

Professor David Johns, Founding Director of the then City Polytechnic of Hong Kong, trained and practised as an aerospace engineer.  He will elaborate upon his around-the-world experience in his illustrated talk, “Travels of an Engineer”, at 4.15pm on 10 December at Lily Chiang Lecture Theatre (LT7), CityU.

Alumni are invited to spread the news to prospective students.
