This extraordinary achievement has only been made possible with the hard work, determination, and persistence of the Hong Kong people. To identify and recognise those whose lives exemplify the Hong Kong Spirit, a group of enthusiasts who share a strong commitment to the future of Hong Kong now organise “Hong Kong Spirit Ambassadors” in its second year. Nominations are now open until 9 May for this city-wide programme. Don’t miss the chance to nominate individuals, especially CityU community members, who demonstrate the attributes of Hong Kong Spirit to the programme. Knowledge is best spread by a lecture from an alumni expert. On 11 March, our enthusiastic Alumni Ambassador, Mr Brave Chan returned to the University to give a guest lecture on Social Enterprise to the current crop of 120 students from BSSSW, BSS Applied Sociology & BSS Applied Psychology.  The students were impressed by his lively presentation and inspired by his enlightening sharing.

TAC_logoWith the enthusiastic feedback in previous Campaigns, CityU is organizing the Telephone Affinity Campaign from mid-March to end of May 2011 for existing Alumni Giving Club members. A team of cheerful student callers will be calling selected Alumni Giving Club members to thank for their staunch support to the University. Student callers would invite alumni to share views on our Club’s activities and seek for support for student development initiatives. The Campaign also aims to update the alumni data and keep in touch with the alumni members.

Student callers are keen to hear your university life in the past CityU and discuss plans for the University’s future too. Hope you would enjoy the call and know more about today’s CityU!

SCs

Sun Sun Sun

Promoting environmental awareness among the alumni community is the mission of Anthony. He is keen to connect like-minded alumni who are committed to making our world more sustainable to advocate green initiative through the Convocation.

Having worked in various industries since graduation, Anthony finds his true calling in the environmental field. Industrial waste management has always been extremely costly and the industry tends to rely on energy inefficient incineration which is harmful to the environment. So he decided to establish a partnership in sludge management that uses energy-efficient technology to put sludge to good use, for example, as secondary fuel for power plants.

Speaking of his education at CityU, Anthony says it helped him to cultivate a spirit of continuous learning. His experience as a Research Assistant at the University helped him to develop the ability to conduct the sort of research that led him to the field of sludge treatment.

Being a member of the Students’ Union in his schooldays also helped him to develop the communication and negotiation skills he has needed in business.

Allen Ho, Standing Committee Member
BBA (Hons) Financial Engineering (2001)
Financial Planner Manager, Branch Manager, The Prudential Assurance Co. Ltd

Allen had no qualms about waking up in the twilight hours to cheer on the valiant CityU runners participating in the Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon last month. He is proud of the sports achievements of our alma mater. Being a sports lover, his most evocative memories of University life are related to sports. He was vice captain of the swimming team in 2001 and was awarded “The Most Dedicated Athlete” in 2000-2001 when he was a student.

Allen’s extensive involvement in sports activities trained him to become a good team player. He treasures the virtues of team spirit and adopts a positive outlook towards the ups and downs of life. His experience in serving the Students’ Union also enriched his event organising skills and sense of social responsibility.

Being an SC member, Allen aspires to strengthen the affiliation of fellow alumni with the alma mater by using it as a communication bridge between them.

Danny Ho, Standing Committee Member
AA Applied Chinese Studies (2004)
Client Relations Executive, Jobs DB Hong Kong Limited

After serving the Convocation for more than a year, Danny says his most impressive experience was the Alumni Summer Camp held on 17 and 18 July last year. He was a key member who organised the fun-filled event that was attended by more than 130 alumni and their family members. Coordinating the large-scale event after his day job was not easy. But the vibrant atmosphere and smiling faces of the participants proved his hard work paid off. The modest member of the post-80s generation attributed the success to the efforts of all SC members, alumni volunteers and the Convocation Secretariat.

Danny’s sense of affiliation with the University developed when he served as an internal vice-president of the Students’ Union. The experiences of liaising with various stakeholders has trained his interpersonal skills, and the many overnight sessions that he spent with other student leaders discussing University and social issues has sharpened his independent thinking.

During his remaining tenure on this relatively new alumni entity, Danny hopes to help lay the foundation of the Convocation by bringing together alumni from all walks of life to support University development.
