Convocation representatives have joined a number of the University’s organising committees and selection panels to channel opinions on behalf of alumni. Convocation Chairman Karmen Chan served on the Selection Panel of the Teaching Excellence Awards to acknowledge outstanding teaching staff. The result was announced on 17 April. Click HERE for more details about the result. This month, the Chairman was also invited to join the selection panel of the Civility Hall JUMP Scholarship to select students who have excelled in academic performance and contributed to the Hall.

On behalf of the Convocation, Vice-Chairman Robert Lui joined the organising committee of the Congregation to give feedback from the perspective of alumni. The University’s Congregation will be held from 13 to 22 November.

Convocation Standing Committee members William Khoo, Robert Lui and Cedric Cheng joined the Alumni Forum “Journey to a Healthy Life” on 17 April. In this forum featuring guest speakers Dr Ko Wing-man and renowned singer Elisa Chan, they learned good tips on striking a work-life balance. They also met up with fellow alumni of different generations and disciplines while taking the opportunity to promote the Convocation.

Mr. Francis Ngai is the founder and CEO of Social Ventures Hong Kong (SVhk, www.sv-hk.org). With experience in marketing, advertising and strategy profession, Francis was Assistant Vice President/ Head of Strategy of a listed technology conglomerate in HK, and responsible for the corporate development and strategy in China. He was a part-time member of the Central Policy Unit, HKSAR Government in 2009/2010 and now serving in a number of government advisory bodies, e.g. Advisory Committee of Enhancing Self-Reliance Fund of Home Affairs Bureau and Sustainable Development Council. He is also a part-time visiting lecturer in universities, e.g. The University of Hong Kong and Chinese University of Hong Kong, focusing in social innovation and entrepreneurship.

He hopes to promote young professionals’ participation in social entrepreneurship and social innovation through the SVhk platform, which is a non-profit venture philanthropic organization, supporting social enterprises in Hong Kong by providing financial, intellectual and network resources. Projects involved include Diamond Cab, Dialogue in the Dark and Concert in the Dark etc.

Mr. Ngai has served in various role of marketing and strategy in well-recognized corporate like PCCW Group, Hutchison Whampoa and Ogilvy and Mather etc. He obtained B.A. (Hon) Quantitative Analysis in City University of Hong Kong and has taken executive program on Social Entrepreneurship and non-profit management in INSEAD Business School (2009) and Harvard Business School (2011) with scholarship.

魏華星先生為《香港社會創投基金》(Social Ventures Hong Kong, SVhk)之創辦人及行政總裁。從事市場與策略工作超過十五年,魏先生於2007年離任科技企業之策略拓展助理副總裁之後,全力創辦基金。

《香港社會創投基金》是香港首家非牟利之慈善創投基金,以投資與商業的手法,為香港的社會企業提供資金、專業知識及網絡資源的支持。曾參與創辦的項目包括《鑽的無障礙的士服務》、《黑暗中對話》及《暗中作樂聲演會》等。SVhk亦動員超過150多位香港的年青專業人士參與社會企業、社會創新的發展。

同時,他亦出任多項公職,如香港特區政府中央政策組非全職顧問(09/10)、夥伴倡自強社區協作計劃及可持續發展委員會等。魏先生近年亦擔任大學兼任客席講師,在香港大學、中文大學、理工大學及嶺南大學教授社會企業與創新的知識。他希望把社會企業發展為香港的重要產業及把社會創新的文化廣泛傳揚。

魏先生畢業於香港城市大學,取得工商數量分析學士學位,後獲獎學金前往哈佛商業學院(2011)及INSEAD歐洲工商管理學院(2009),進修有關社會企業及非營利管理之行政管理課程。魏先生曾服務於電訊盈科、和記黃埔及奧美廣告等企業集團。

CityU alumni including Dilys Chau and Chet Lam shared their success and life experience along with renowned guests such as Dr Ricky Szeto Wing-fu with around 200 secondary school students. Organised by CityU on 21 April, the programme “Shaping Your Future: A Lifetime of Difference” featured talks and sharing sessions delivered by guests from different fields. It aimed to help students identify their objectives and goals in order to make appropriate choices for their undergraduate programmes and universities. The CityU EngD Society held a seminar themed “Let life inspire life – from Stress to Strength” (讓生命鼓舞生命 – 化壓力為動力) on 24 March that attracted close to 80 participants. Four women speakers shared their experience of how to transform stress into strength and convert stress to their motivation. Participants were also treated to demonstrations of progressive relaxation techniques and a sharing by a scleroderma patient.

A delegation from National Taipei University visited CityU on 28 March for various exchanges including alumni services. Associate Vice-President (Alumni Relations) Kathy Chan greeted the members who said how impressed they were by the flourishing and multi-natured development of CityU’s alumni service.

Famous vocalist Elisa Chan and Chairman of The Hong Kong Anti-Cancer Society Dr Ko Wing-man shed light on the secrets of how to strike a balance for a healthy life amidst hectic schedules at CityU Alumni Forum on 17 April. The inspiring event attracted some 100 alumni and CityU friends.  View the photo gallery and University report.

Teaching Excellence Awards for 2011/12

I am pleased to announce the Teaching Excellence Awards for 2011/12, which were announced by President Way KUO at the Teaching and Learning Fair held on 17 April. 

A total of 30 nominations were received and reviewed by the Teaching Excellence Award Selection Panel, comprising the Associate Provost (Quality Assurance) Professor Christian WAGNER as Chairman; Professor Gregory RAUPP; Professor Stella PANG; Professor GONG Ting; Dr. Surya DEVA; Ms. Wisteria CHEUNG; Ms. Karmen CHAN as the alumni representative; and two student members: Miss WAI Ho Kei and Miss NG Hei Tung.  The Panel selected the following colleagues, listed alphabetically, as the Teaching Excellence Award recipients for this year:

Dr. Stephen BREMNER (EN) for ‘Helping students to make connections

Dr. Ray Chak Chung CHEUNG (EE) for ‘Leading students to program their learning success’

Dr. LI Minming (CS) for ‘Encouraging knowledge discovery through passion’

Professor LIU Zhi Qiang (SCM) for ‘Education 2.0: Playful learning for practice’

Dr. Maris G. MARTINSONS (MGT) for ‘Preparing learners in the classroom for the boardroom’

Dr. SUN Hongyi (SEEM) for ‘Teaching innovativeness: From problem discovery to entrepreneurship’

The awards will be formally presented at the Congregation in November 2012, and awardee names will be added to the permanently displayed register of CityU Teaching Excellence Award recipients.  Each awardee receives a cash prize of $15,000 for professional development and a teaching grant of $150,000.

「我認為有意義的事,就是生命的施予、付出,與人共享,這比索取更讓人感到歡欣。」杜文傑誠懇地說道。自從2003年從城大應用社會科學系畢業後,文傑 (Keith)一直在從事社工服務,主要服務的群體是智障人士。談及城大三年中他最深刻的回憶時,文傑對老師和同學充滿感激:「在相處的過程中,我學會了什麼才是生命中有意義的追求。生命的方向並不會一成不變,只要做的事情有意義就能心滿意足了。」求學以外,Keith亦喜在城大締結良緣,認識了同系的學妹黃佩芬(Iris),兩人相知相愛,共訂終生。Iris 跟Keith 一樣能學以致用,在畢業後投身社工專業,以一己所長貢獻社會。

社工並不是一項輕鬆容易的工作,但幾年的相處讓文傑對智障人士有了新的認識。「每個人都是有價值的,智障人士也是,他們也有一些較我們優勝的地方,我們也會從他們身上學到一些東西。比如他們見我工作很辛苦,會主動拿紙巾替我擦汗;平日見面時也會很熱情地打招呼等等。他們的真摯是有時連我們普通人都做不到的。」 

2011年在深圳做了一年社工督導服務的Keith,將人生的下一站放了在湖南長沙。曾在學生時代以交流生的身份訪問過長沙民政學院的Keith,此次將與妻子Iris同行,以導師的身份重返故地。「我們會在當地逗留一整年,教授兩個科目,主要是社工方面的。」他解釋道:「不過其實心裡還是有些擔心,畢竟工作性質從之前的服務轉為教育,的確有所不同。另外普通話對我來說也將是個考驗,不過我會多學習和請教朋友,將自己裝備完善。」

聊到內地的社工現狀及發展前景,Keith侃侃而談:「內地的發展前景總體來說還是很廣闊的。已經有不少學校開展社工方面的課程,這是教育上的進步。但相對來說,工作崗位還是較香港少很多的,而實踐和實習的機會亦是比較有限的。因此內地的學生可能會產生信心不足的想法。我這一次過去教學,就想與他們分享一些服務技巧、經驗、態度以及對人的看法等等,希望能有所幫助。」

本文刊登之時,Keith與Iris已經抵達長沙並著手開展教學工作,祝願他們在長沙會渡過豐盛滿足的一年。
