Convocation Vice-Chairman Mr William Khoo has been invited to serve on the City AlumNet Advisory Committee for the second consecutive year to foster closer ties with the alumni community. The next issue of City AlumNet, the University’s annual alumni magazine, will be published in early 2014. It provides highlights of University development over the year, and other forthcoming alumni news, activities and updates.

William brainstormed ideas on the overall direction and the way forward for the magazine at the meeting held on 11 July. He appreciated the opportunity to be an adviser and through his role to encourage alumni to learn more about CityU’s rapid development and to stay connected through University publication.

Convocation Chairman Miss Karmen Chan, also in her capacity as a Panel member of the AC3 Opening Ceremony Review Group, is pleased to see that the University has accepted the report submitted by the AC3 Review Group and will set up an inter-departmental working group to follow up on the recommendations put forward.

The Review Group was set up on 12 May to review the logistics, operations and security arrangements of the AC3 Opening Ceremony held on 6 May 2013. Under the Chairmanship of Professor Ray Yep, members of the Review Group had carried out an exhaustive review on the incident and completed its entire process after two months. The Review Group presented a total of 13 recommendations in the report for improvement.

Karmen is highly impressed by the enormous effort of all the panel members, whom are congenial and professional, for their relentless determination to carry out an impartial evaluation. She is confident that the University will continue to maintain its objective stance and uphold freedom of expression in future.

She also extended her sincere gratitude to the students, alumni and all parties who have offered feedback to the Review Group. Their concerted support is indispensable for ensuring a smooth review process. As Convocation Chairman, Karmen also thanked the University for inviting her to serve on the Panel, thus the views of the alumni can be put forward to the Review Group.

The Convocation is dedicated to connecting alumni with the University and encouraging them to continuously show concern to their alma mater for better development of the University.

The CityU Social Work Alumni Association (CityUSWAA) has organised two successful training workshops with the aims to connect social work graduates, serve the University, and enhance social and professional development of social work students and graduates. The “Action Therapy for Social Workers & Counsellors” (行動治療—社工應用) held on 25 May and “Workshop on Outreaching Social Work” (外展社工樂與怒) on 7 June were co-organised by the Department of Applied Social Studies (SS) and the Division of Social Sciences, Community College of the City University of Hong Kong (DSS).

Action Therapy is the brainchild of SS Department Head Professor Lo Tit-wing, who introduced the process through a series of role plays and demonstrations with members of the Action Therapy Centre of SS. About 100 staff, students, and alumni from both units joined the meaningful talk with interactive sharing on 25 May.

The full-day Workshop on Outreaching Social Work held on 7 June was conducted interactively by alumnus Mr Chuk Wing-hung, Keswick (Bachelor of Social Work Juris Doctor). Mr Chuk, an experienced outreaching social worker, shared his knowledge and work experience with some 20 SS and DSS participants, including alumni and practicing social workers. They held wide-ranging discussions on the problems and challenges of outreaching social work in Hong Kong.

CityUSWAA President Mr Ivanhoe Ko Chi-wan (Bachelor of Social Work 1994) was encouraged by the very positive feedback from participants at what was the first educational activity organised by the Association. He thanked the two speakers for their support and contributions, and stated that CityUSWAA will hold similar programmes in the future to meet the needs of social work students and graduates.

CityU Eminence Society had the privilege to have fellow alumnus the Hon Rimsky Yuen SC JP, Secretary for Justice of the HKSAR Government, speak at its luncheon at the Grand Hyatt Hotel on 12 July 2013. The event attracted some 50 participants including members of the Eminence Society, business leaders and professionals.

Mr Yuen delivered an insightful speech on the current legal system and policies, the future development of Hong Kong along with his objective to enhance Hong Kong’s status as a regional centre for legal services and dispute resolution. Mr Yuen graduated from the LLM Chinese and Comparative Law programme, and served on the First Executive Committee of the Eminence Society.

The luncheon strengthened the bond among members and provided them with a platform to network with other attendees. They treasured the opportunity to meet Mr Yuen and look forward to the next luncheon with another celebrity guest.

More than 1,200 enthusiastic and dedicated alumni have helped generate HK$1.97m (including Government Matching Grant) for the Alumni Giving Club (AGC) 10th Anniversary Fundraising Campaign. The University thanks all alumni supporters who have joined hands to show their caring support to their alma mater and new generation of students, and to help build a caring and giving tradition.

In recognition of the valuable gifts made by these AGC members and to celebrate this significant AGC milestone, a series of specially-designed anniversary gifts and bonus privileges have been prepared. Distinctive naming opportunities at the University’s Chinese Garden are also available exclusively to eligible alumni donors on a first-come, first-served basis. Details can be obtained from the AGC website at www.cityu.edu.hk/do/agc or via phone addressed to the Development Office at 3442 5306.

As a token of appreciation, alumni donors who have contributed at least HK$10,000 to the University via the Campaign can designate a plaque to be installed on a stone bench, or for donations of at least $50,000 on a pillar at the University’s Chinese Garden for ten years.

The University Chinese Garden’s trail, pavilions, ponds, stone benches and pillars can be named as designated by donors for a period of ten years, on a first-come, first-served basis.

A very practical programme designed for practitioners in the field of accounting, banking and financial services. More details on www.cityu.edu.hk/ce/law
