Cedric Cheng, Standing Committee Member
BBA (Hons) Finance (2006)
Bachelor of Laws (Hons) (2010)
Trainee solicitor
Hobson & Ma, Solicitors & Notaries

CityU is the second home of Cedric. He has studied and lived at the University since 2002. As a residence tutor, the vibrant hall life has impressed him the most and teaching junior students to uphold their beliefs has been his main task.

One of his most memorable experiences was to help the hall students to organise and compromise their opinions into a comprehensive proposal to the Student Residence Committee on the allocation process and scoring system for Undergraduate halls last year. Their proposal was finally adopted by the committee. I feel very pleased to see the maturing and progressing of the fellow hallmates, Cedric says.

In 2003, he took the initiative in organizing a protest against the SAR Government’s budget cut in education when he was the External Vice-President of the Student’s Union. He represented CityU students to attend the Legislative Council meeting where he met various high officials of the government to negotiate the educational funding and discussed the blue map of future education with them. The protest successfully led the government to rethink its plan in cutting the university funding as an attempt to save money.

After graduating from the College of Business with a bachelor degree and working in a bank for two years, Cedric realised he still had room for improvement and decided to pursue studying law, a subject that he had been fond of since 2003 with the hope to utilise his skills to help people in need. I believe receiving practical training at CityU will provide me a chance to compete with the best students in Hong Kong and the quintessence of becoming a trainee, says Cedric who is now a trainee solicitor.

“Studying at CityU has been an amazing experience and it transforms me into a responsible and focused person,” he says. “Being a student leader and alumni leader granted me a wonderful experience. It’s challenging yet fulfilling.”

Eddie Lau, Standing Committee Member
ASocSc Public Administration and Management (2004)
Custom Officer
Customs and Excise Department, HKSAR Government

Eddie has this gift for his alma mater: passion. To repay CityU for what he has experienced and accomplished during his schooldays, Eddie, a young man full of ideals, aspires to devote himself for the betterment of the alma mater. Joining the Standing Committee of the Convocation is a platform for him to realise his ideals.

Eddie is proud of the excellence in education of CityU. He says the social contribution of CityU is equally important. To promote the image of the University at the societal level, he believes it relies on the concerted efforts of the University, students and alumni. He encourages alumni to support the University in diverse ways, particularly using their wisdom and experience to elevate the alma mater to another level.

As an active student leader, Eddie was already enthusiastic about the University and social affairs. As an undergrad, he encouraged fellow students to express their views through community work and social action such as using survey to gauge views of students and demonstration.

The liberal environment of the University was an eye-opener for him and made him understand more about the plights of the grass roots, which was a driving force for him to join the disciplined services upon graduation.

Now an alumni leader, Eddie’s passion for the University has not been blunted, and he believes there are many different ways for him to contribute to the University.
Over the past year, Eddie has joined various alumni activities. He also involved in organising the “Reunion for Ex-SU Leaders” and the “Alumni Summer Camp”. Both activities successfully united alumni to reminisce their university experiences and foster their affiliation with the alma mater.

Richard Yen, Standing Committee Member
BBA (Hons) Human Resources Management (2006)
Assistant Human Resources Officer
AECOM

Richard achieved a lot of his “first time” experiences with CityU during his presidency of the City University Philharmonic Orchestra. Under his leadership, the orchestra became the first local university orchestra without a music school to hold a large-scale classical concert – playing Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 at City Hall. Another first for CityU was organising an orchestra exchange tour with Tianjin University, which totally rocked the university’s tradition of exchange tours.

“Supports from senior management of the University helped me to inject more passion into managing the Orchestra and the desire to acquire more knowledge from the classical music,” he says.

His passion for music continues after graduation despite his busy day job. His musical talent was showcased at the Homecoming Gala concert held last December. For him, music is the common language to unite alumni.

Richard’s sports talent has also been fully developed at CityU through its strong culture for sports. He joined the Taekwondo class during his schooldays. Then this year he joined the CityU Delegation to compete in the “Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon 2011” and was the fifth fastest alumni runner in the 10km race.

As a member of the Standing Committee, Richard wishes to promote the Convocation to serve as a channel for alumni to know more about the University’s development.

What is Convocation?
