We are deeply saddened by the unexpected passing of Professor Ko Inq-ming. It is particularly saddening for alumni and friends who have known Professor Ko or had been taught by him while he was serving as Vice-President (Undergraduate Education), Dean of Students and Professor (Chair) of Chemistry at CityU.

I have known Professor Ko since he joined CityU in 1998. I greatly appreciate the advice and help he had given me when I was serving the Students’ Union as the President. I truly respect him as he had devoted his life to students, education and the Hong Kong community at all levels.

Professor Ko was a selfless and committed educator with profound vision and insight. During his term of office, he made valuable contributions to CityU. He had catalyzed many new moves and was dedicated to improving teaching quality and enhancing students’ exposure.

The Professor Edmond Ko Cup, consisting of sports, arts and cultural competitions, was set up to recognize his contributions to setting forth the directions in establishing and developing students’ residences. I had the opportunity to attend the Inter-Hall Singing Contest last year. I was greatly impressed by how friendship, respect and cooperation that Professor Ko advocated had been successfully realized among students. I could strongly feel that the spirit of Professor Ko had ignited the hearts of our young CityU fellows.

His care for us did not stop after we graduated. I met him occasionally with several former leaders of the Students’ Union after we left CityU. I recalled that every time we met, Professor Ko was always undertaking new tasks and challenges. However, he remained gentle and enthusiastic as ever. When he talked about his teaching, I could feel his passion; when he mentioned his engagement, I could feel his devotion.

For us, Professor Ko is always a well-respected teacher, inspiring mentor and caring friend. His words have been marked deep in our hearts. He will forever be missed and remembered. We are grateful for everything he did for us and for CityU. We hope his passion in life and education will pass down from generation to generation.
