Convocation was invited to serve as Supporting Organisation of two social work workshops organised by the City University of Hong Kong Social Work Alumni Association in February and March.

The workshops, entitled “死亡別狂傲”and “Shape出使命人生”featuring alumni speakers Mr Arnold Leung and Ms Annie Chiang on 22 February and 29 March respectively, targeted at social work alumni and current students of the Department of Applied Social Studies, and also CityU staff members.

Convocation was pleased to support the initiative and promote the workshops to alumni via its promotional channels for their continuous professional development.

Around 650 participants including students, residence masters, alumni and staff joined the Joint-Hall Dinner themed “Living in the City” on 26 February at the outdoor area of the Student Residence.

Convocation Chairman Mr Clovis Lau was delighted to join this joyous occasion and he appreciated the initiative which aimed to provide an opportunity for hall residents to network and develop a sense of unity amongst the CityU community. Also joining the dinner included Convocation Vice-Chairman Mr Cedric Cheng and Standing Committee member Mr Gabriel Ho who were former hall tutors. Clovis, joined by Cedric and Gabriel, was invited to serve on the judging panel for a talent show for which each hall sent representatives. Clovis was glad to see the event that demonstrates the core value of the Student Residence and was impressed by the brilliant performance of the night.

Convocation Chairman Mr Clovis Lau is delighted to join the joyous occasion and greets representatives of hall residents.

Convocation is devoted to strengthening CityU’s non-local alumni network.

The Convocation supported an alumni gathering in Shenzhen organised by the Alumni Relations Office on 21 February. Convocation Vice-Chairman Mr William Khoo met some 100 alumni residing mainly in Shenzhen and its neighboring cities, and also friends and CityU representatives at a networking cocktail at the CityU Shenzhen Research Institute – a permanent base of CityU for applied research, incubation and professional education in the mainland. With Convocation serving as Event Partner, William was invited to deliver a speech and he gaily shared his aspirations of uniting alumni’s support for their alma mater.

Highlights of the evening included a campus tour to several state-of-the-art key research centers, laboratories and facilities. Participants were impressed by the research capabilities of CityU in the mainland, and delighted to have the opportunity to get together in this auspicious spring season.

Convocation cheers on CityU Marathon Runners

Convocation shows full support to the CityU Delegation at the Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon this year.

Convocation Vice-Chairman Mr William Khoo, Standing Committee members Mr Gabriel Ho, Mr Aaron Hui, Mr James Kong, Miss Flora Leung, Mr Billy Li and Miss Ywing Yeung joined the support team on-site in the early morning on 16 February to cheer on some 1,200-strong CityU runners at the race. Vice-Chairman Mr Joseph Tsoi also represented the Convocation at the flag presentation ceremony held on 7 February to gear up the runners.

This annual event aims to strengthen unity among the CityU community and also encourage them to do exercise. Convocation is proud to witness CityU runners who demonstrated great enthusiasm and completed the race successfully!

Convocation hails valiant CityU marathon runners.

In a recent meeting of the 30th Anniversary Sub-committee on Student Programme held on 12 February, Convocation Chairman Mr Clovis Lau reviewed the progress of work with its Committee members on the various initiatives of student programmes for the University′s 30th anniversary!

Highlights include a Joint-Concert, 30 Voluntary Service Projects, a Video Competition and Talks by popular writers/artists. The Convocation will bring to the timely attention of alumni and encourage them to join-in these celebration programmes.

The Convocation is dedicated to uniting fellow alumni to support social service endeavors. This year, as its second consecutive year, the Convocation continues to serve as the Supporting Unit for “City-Youth Empowerment Project – Career Workshop for Ethnic Minority”. This annual social service programme, organised by City-Youth Empowerment Project of the Department of Applied Social Studies, will take place on 2 March.

Ethnic youths from a secondary school will receive a half-day orientation on interview skills and hands-on training by participating in the mock interviews. Highlights of the workshop include a career sharing-session to be conducted by a group of alumni volunteers from different career fields to give participants a broad view of options. The Convocation would like to extend a special thanks to those alumni who will be joining the Standing Committee members to serve as volunteers on this occasion.

Convocation to cheer on CityU marathon runners

Convocation Standing Committee members will be pumping the CityU Delegation up at the 2014 Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon on 16 February!

Convocation, one of the joint-organizers of the event, is thrilled to see that this year’s delegation has attracted some 1,200 vigorous runners comprising alumni, students and staff members. Participating for the seventh year in a row, the annual event aims to encourage exercise, healthy life and strengthen unity among the CityU community. We wish the CityU runners all can demonstrate a strong spirit of unity and achieve their Personal Best (PB) in this run, cheers!

Marathon
Convocation leaders will be supporting our athletes on the race day.

The selection process of Teaching Excellence Awards 2013/14, the annual award to acknowledge excellent teachers and to promote best teaching practices in CityU, is in full swing. Serving on the Selection Panel, Convocation delegated its Standing Committee members Miss Karmen Chan and Mr Billy Li to attend the panel meetings on 15 and 22 January respectively. Check out for the result announcement in February!

Convocation Vice-Chairman Mr Robert Lui was delighted to join the 30th Anniversary Kick-off Ceremony on behalf of the Convocation, the first university-wide celebration activity on January 22, to witness our University turned 30!

To commemorate this significant moment, Robert was invited to join other officiating guests, including Sir Gordon, Chairman of Hopewell Holdings Limited and former Council Chairman of CityU; Dr Norman Leung, Executive Chairman of Television Broadcasts Ltd (TVB) and Pro-Chancellor of CityU; Mr Herman Hu, Council Chairman of CityU; Professor Kuo Way, University President; representatives of Students’ Union (SU) and the City University Postgraduate Association (CUPA) in presiding at the kick-off and cake-cutting ceremony to unveil a year-long celebration programmes spanning through 2014.

One of the highlights in the kick-off celebration centered on a procession on stage comprising 10 teams that are indispensable part of the University, including our fellow-alumni, long-serving staff, SU, CUPA, Student Ambassadors, CityU Delegation Marathon runners, Choir, Dancing Society, Philharmonic Orchestra and Chinese Orchestra. The ceremony also provided an occasion for all parties to come together and celebrate this historical moment of CityU.

The 30th anniversary celebration will feature a diverse programme of events from now on.  The Convocation encourages the alumni community to join the celebration and continues to support the growth of the University.

May I take this opportunity to wish all CityU community members good health, happiness and prosperity in the year of 2014!

On behalf of my members of the Fourth Standing Committee, I would pledge that the Convocation will continue to work towards strengthening alumni relationship, and we are ready to dedicate our unreserved devotion to unite our fellow alumni community to support University development.
