More than 50 people attended a CityU Eminence Society dinner forum featuring President of the Chinese Gold & Silver Exchange Society Mr Haywood Cheung, who spoke on the prospects for Qianhai, the boom town located on the outskirts of Shenzhen.

Mr Cheung, a graduate of the CityU EMBA programme and fellow Eminence member, shared his views about the town’s labour situation and economic environment, including development of the property market, stressing the importance of cooperation between Qianhai and Hong Kong. He also discussed recent developments in Shanghai and its potential impact on Hong Kong.

The dinner, held at the Chinese General Chamber of Commerce Members Club on 11 October, included a lively Q&A session, in which Haywood encouraged local entrepreneurs to consider Qianhai as an opportunity to expand business and bring benefits to Hong Kong.

CityU Court Member and recipient of the First Distinguished Alumni Award Dr John Chan shared his insightful and inspiring stories on business management and personal life at the Business Leader Forum organised by Department of Marketing on 10 October. Some 270 students, alumni and business executives attended the meeting.

At the talk, Dr Chan revealed five DNAs to business success and 32 tips to avoid failure, and analysed the pros and cons of starting a business from the 4Ps marketing perspective – Product, Price, Place, and Promotion. He also gave practical advice on preventing, reacting to, and overcoming crises, and how one can stand firm and move forward from a challenging and difficult situation. To close the forum, he encouraged students to pursue their careers with passion, perseverance and a good learning attitude. Dr Chan is a graduate of EMBA and DBA programmes at CityU.

CityU Eminence Society is helping sponsor the City-Youth Empowerment Project for a third year, a University scheme that equips CityU student volunteers with the necessary skills to provide services to people in need and to organise meaningful activities. Society Chairman Mr Simon Hui attended the kick-off ceremony on 18 September as a special guest to witness the inauguration of student volunteers for the new academic year.

Now with an accumulated membership of close to 2,000 student volunteers, 2,500 service recipients, and 40,000 service hours, the Project has evolved from its inception prototype to a much richer university-wide community service platform open to all students in the university under the guidance of the Department of Applied Social Studies. Coordinated by CityU Alumni Ambassadors in Singapore, some 20 alumni and friends celebrated the Mid-Autumn Festival on 14 September at the dinner jointly organised by Singapore alumni associations and networks of Hong Kong universities including CityU. They treasured the opportunity to reconnect in this festive season while networking with other 100 participants.

CityU Council Member and First Distinguished Alumni Award recipient Mr Andrew Fan generously sponsored welcome gifts (worth SG280 each) for all participants. Other gift sponsors included Alumni Relations Office and Cathay Pacific Airways.

Incoming Mainland students and their parents gained their first impressions of CityU on 27 July 2013 when alumni leaders Mr Jeffrey Li [Bsc (Honours) in Surveying (Law Minor)] and Ms Shirley Liu [BBA (Honours) in Accountancy] shared their fruitful experiences at the pre-arrival orientation sessions in Beijing and Shanghai respectively. Organised by the Mainland and External Affairs Office, the sessions gave the students-to-be an insight of university life and how the alumni’s study experiences had benefited their subsequent achievements in their careers. Jeffrey shared that leadership skills and team spirit were critical elements for success and career development, while Shirley highlighted the importance of social network.

The Alumni Relations Office is most grateful to Jeffrey and Shirley as well as other alumni leaders who have helped strengthen the Mainland alumni network and contributed much of their time to the University’s other outreach endeavours there.

Shirley shares tips on building interpersonal relationships, which can be lifelong assets to students, whether for work or study.

A group of CityU alumni in Singapore joined a luncheon hosted by Hong Kong’s Chief Secretary for Administration, Mrs Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor on 31 July 2013. They treasured the opportunity to meet Mrs Lam along with alumni of other universities and members of the Hong Kong community living in Singapore.

As well as briefing her audience on the latest developments in Hong Kong, Mrs Lam encouraged them to contribute to a closer relationship between Hong Kong and Singapore. The lunch gathering was part of Mrs Lam’s official visit to Singapore in which she also met government officials to understand more about Singapore’s population policy.

The CityU Social Work Alumni Association (CityUSWAA) has organised two successful training workshops with the aims to connect social work graduates, serve the University, and enhance social and professional development of social work students and graduates. The “Action Therapy for Social Workers & Counsellors” (行動治療—社工應用) held on 25 May and “Workshop on Outreaching Social Work” (外展社工樂與怒) on 7 June were co-organised by the Department of Applied Social Studies (SS) and the Division of Social Sciences, Community College of the City University of Hong Kong (DSS).

Action Therapy is the brainchild of SS Department Head Professor Lo Tit-wing, who introduced the process through a series of role plays and demonstrations with members of the Action Therapy Centre of SS. About 100 staff, students, and alumni from both units joined the meaningful talk with interactive sharing on 25 May.

The full-day Workshop on Outreaching Social Work held on 7 June was conducted interactively by alumnus Mr Chuk Wing-hung, Keswick (Bachelor of Social Work Juris Doctor). Mr Chuk, an experienced outreaching social worker, shared his knowledge and work experience with some 20 SS and DSS participants, including alumni and practicing social workers. They held wide-ranging discussions on the problems and challenges of outreaching social work in Hong Kong.

CityUSWAA President Mr Ivanhoe Ko Chi-wan (Bachelor of Social Work 1994) was encouraged by the very positive feedback from participants at what was the first educational activity organised by the Association. He thanked the two speakers for their support and contributions, and stated that CityUSWAA will hold similar programmes in the future to meet the needs of social work students and graduates.

CityU Eminence Society had the privilege to have fellow alumnus the Hon Rimsky Yuen SC JP, Secretary for Justice of the HKSAR Government, speak at its luncheon at the Grand Hyatt Hotel on 12 July 2013. The event attracted some 50 participants including members of the Eminence Society, business leaders and professionals.

Mr Yuen delivered an insightful speech on the current legal system and policies, the future development of Hong Kong along with his objective to enhance Hong Kong’s status as a regional centre for legal services and dispute resolution. Mr Yuen graduated from the LLM Chinese and Comparative Law programme, and served on the First Executive Committee of the Eminence Society.

The luncheon strengthened the bond among members and provided them with a platform to network with other attendees. They treasured the opportunity to meet Mr Yuen and look forward to the next luncheon with another celebrity guest.

Alumni and students got useful tips on the marketing of internet development in mobile communication at the interactive “MBA Professional Forum” organised by the College of Business on 31 May 2013. The guest speaker was Director & CEO of Rock Mobile Mr Jack Li, who spoke on the topic “移動互聯網時代的跨界經營”. Also joining the event was alumni leader Ms Qin Yi who is the Senior Vice-President of Rock Mobile and enjoys interacting and sharing career tips with students. Dr Kevin Chiang, Director of the Master of Business Administration programme, thanked them for their support and noted that similar meetings with senior alumni would help students to broaden their horizons.

Some 90 alumni and students of the School of Law gathered on campus on 28 May 2013 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the Bachelor of Laws (LLB) programme. It was a great occasion to reminisce about the old days and reconnect with fellow alumni. The alumni also showed their appreciation of the nurture of the University and School to the Dean Professor Wang Gui Guo and other academics attending the event. Chairman of the School of Law Alumni Association Ms Bonita Chan appealed to all attendees to stay connected with CityU and participate in various alumni activities of the University.
