Let’s give our alma mater a double boost!

Tuesday, August 31st, 2010

The Convocation is calling for your timely support to make a donation towards CityU’s further development at a time when your contribution can be doubled under the 5th Government Matching Grant Scheme. And please remember, since the dollar-for-dollar matching funds are allocated to universities on a first-come-first-served basis, there’s no time to delay!

Your generosity can help the University proceed apace with various new building expansions so as to sustain our phenomenal growth. In addition, more resources will be needed to handle the increase in student population brought about by the “3+3+4” academic structural reform and to ensure a more rewarding university life for future CityU students.
Don’t miss this chance to double your support for your alma mater and show how much you care. Please do it NOW! To learn more about how your contribution could benefit your alma mater, please visit here.

The Convocation Committee share memories of their days at CityU during a meeting.

Students who took part in the 4th Telephone Affinity Campaign from 28 June to 10 August 2010 say they had a great time chatting with alumni. The callers contacted over 4,000 alumni to share news of the University’s latest developments and to seek their support. They also took the opportunity to update contact details to help strengthen the relationship with their alma mater. The six-week campaign generated over HK$1.55 million to support student development programmes. Both alumni and students appreciated and enjoyed this friendly and interactive approach to reinforce the bond between alumni and CityU.

“The alumni were so kind,” said caller Jenny Lee. “They gave me advice on my future career and encouraged me to work harder.” Fellow student Tony Sin would also like to thank all alumni for their support of CityU. “They enrich our student lives through funding of support initiatives. More importantly, we feel so blissful with all the care from our alumni.”
In addition to devoting their spare time to make the calls, all participating students supported the campaign with their own donations to the University.

Tuesday, August 31st, 2010

Join us to taste the flavours of life

Tuesday, August 31st, 2010

Sweetness, sourness, bitterness… flavours that we taste not only in food, but also in our emotional lives. Find out more on 27 September when Professor Frederick MA Si Hang(馬時亨教授)shares his experience in culinary arts and life philosophy at the “CityU Alumni Forum: From Gourmet Delights to Flavours of Life”. Our President, Professor Way KUO(郭位教授)will also demonstrate his signature dish to illustrate his wisdom on life. Seats are limited, so register here without delay.

Pre-arrival orientations for Mainland foundation year students were held on 31 July and 7 August in Shanghai and Guangzhou respectively under the auspices of the Mainland and External Affairs Office. Alumni mentors are enthusiastic to share tips with new Mainland entrants and this time, with the coordination of Alumni Relations Office, three Alumni Liaison Ambassadors Michael Ma (LLM 2003), Annie Liu (BBA 2006) and Jason Jiang (BEIE 2010) gave the newly admitted students a taste of their experiences and what to expect at CityU in respective sessions.

Similar orientations were earlier held in Beijing and Chongqing and in total, some 220 parents and new students attended the four events. The feedback was very positive, with students finding the briefings from alumni particularly useful.

Close to 50 students and their parents who attended the pre-arrival orientation session held in Guangzhou on 7 August praised highly the sharing of alumni.

Your timely contribution makes a difference

It is encouraging to report that many alumni have already made donations to CityU since the Government launched its latest Matching Grant Scheme on 1 June. Under the scheme running through to 15 March 2011, every dollar donated will be matched equally up to a ‘floor amount’ of HK$45 million, and subsequently on a one-for-two ratio, i.e. $1 Government matching grant for every $2 donation, on a first-come-first-served basis among all tertiary institutions. So your timely support can make a big difference! If you haven’t already done so, please act now to show your support by donating to the Convocation Scholarship for student development. For more details, please check HERE.

Members of the Convocation Standing Committee including Chairman Karmen Chan, Cedric Cheng, William Khoo, Danny Ho and Iris Lam cheer for students supporting the University’s telephone affinity and fundraising campaign.

Alumni support means a lot to new students

It’s that time of year when our alma mater arranges a series of orientation activities to usher in new students. As old boys and girls of the University, you can play an important role in helping the freshmen enter this new chapter of their lives. Your insights and wisdom can help them grow and prepare for the challenges ahead in their studies at CityU.

So don’t be shy – please take the opportunity to get involved and share your experiences, as well as offer assistance in upcoming Convocation activities or projects for students. We hope our new CityU recruits will be embraced by the same caring culture as we were once welcomed with open arms into the CityU family. Let’s help them feel right at home!

What is Convocation?

The University Convocation, which comprises all graduates of the University, is a statutory body formed in accordance with the University Ordinance (Statute 10) aiming to strengthen and promote the relationships among members of the Convocation, between the Convocation and the University, and between the University and the general public. It works towards promoting the objectives and activities of the University.

The Chairman and Standing Committee members of the Convocation are elected by and from the members of the Convocation.

Please contact us through the Convocation Secretariat with contacts as follows:

Sixteen social work alumni including three Alumni Ambassadors shared their working experiences and personal development since graduation with more than 100 BSSSW freshmen and student mentors during a Social Work Training Camp organized by the Department of Applied Social Studies. The sessions proved to be a highlight of the camp held at CityU Student Residence from 5 to 8 August with the theme of “Preface x Preface”. The freshmen and student mentors said they learned a lot through the sharing experience. This was the fourth year alumni have volunteered to participate in such meaningful sessions.
