Professor Way Kuo, President of CityU and University Distinguished Professor had a candid chat with alumni at “A Dialogue with the President” on 20 June. In the interactive sharing facilitated by Convocation Chairman Ms Karmen Chan, the President discussed the latest developments at the University and his vision on the core values of CityU. Alumni also took the opportunity to invite the President to shed light on his views on teaching, research and student development. View the photo HERE.

The Convocation joined forces with the LEO Clubs to instil positive energy at “Career Navigator – Crisis Avengers” on 2 June. The talk attracting some 150 participants featured inspiring sharing by guest speakers Dr Toby Chan (陳立邁博士), Dr Christie Wo (胡敏珊博士), Mr Nelson Yip (葉少康先生) and Mr Patrick Yuen (袁景森先生).

Their talks revolved around their experiences in overcoming career crises and developing leadership skills. Veteran NLP practitioner Patrick gave tips on converting negative thoughts into positive energy. He invited participants to write some encouraging messages on bookmarks and share their blessings with each other. 由評議會及校友聯絡處合辦的「與校長對話」於六月二十日完滿結束,當日約有八十位參加者,包括評議會的成員,以及許多熱心的校友會代表和一眾不同年代的校友出席。校長郭位教授與大家分享了大學最新的發展動向,以及他對大學校訓「敬業樂群」的看法。其後,由評議會主席陳嘉雯小姐主持互動分享環節,校友們亦踴躍向校長提問,了解大學如何平衡研究及教學及提出有助提升大學形象的意見等等。

這幾年,我因為經常出差而錯過了多次「與校長對話」這個活動。因此今年,是我第一次參與是次活動。對於我來說,可以講得上感慨良多。見到校友們能與校長作出真真正正的互動,我覺得是次活動十分有價值。作為校友,我希望能回饋大學,因為我今天得到的許多成果,都是源於大學時代所接受到的教育,所以我選擇直接參與評議會的工作及出席學校的活動,以示對母校的支持。

但最令我最感慨的是,雖然今次活動是開放予所有校友參加,可是報名的校友只有一百二十人。而大學現今有超過十二萬校友,換句話說,當日報名人數佔全部校友不足千份之一,最終當日出席人數只有八十位。我從中看到了一個契機,我們需要更加多的熱心校友挺身而出,肩負起團結城大人的使命。現時大學有校友組織三十二個,分別來自不同的學科或興趣組織。我期望未來能夠凝聚更多校友支持大學,這正正需要評議會與其他校友組織,加上各位熱心的校友將力量融合才能實踐的。

三年的大學生活為我帶來了許多回憶,例如第一次參與迎新營、於演講廳上堂,加上Canteen、Sports Complex、圖書館、位於南山邨的「樹記」、後山小徑等等,這許多許多都叫我非常懷念。這些回憶加強了我為大學出一分力的動力,我們必須要首先挺身而出,維繫校友之間的情誼。任何人於社會、家庭,或是工作上,都會同時擔當不同的角色。但作為城大人,如果能加強城大眾多校友之間的連結,這個群體必定能變得更有力量。而這必須要建基於評議會及所有校友組織的努力,所以我們希望可以透過不同的活動,讓大家團結起來去了解、參與大學的發展,而校友自身亦能從中有所得著。

可能會有人提出,為什麼要團結校友組織﹖我自己以及一些校友都有一個理念﹕城大雖沒有百年歷史,但許多校友均年青且積極,當我們能團結更多校友,必定能幫助母校建立我們的品牌及名聲。因為,這不僅僅有助畢業生就業或得到社會的認同,更重要的是我們作為大學的畢業生,我們一方面享受著大學給予我們的優勢,同時亦都有義務及能力去成為創造和建立屬於我們的品牌,讓師弟、師妹,甚至我們本身,都對作為「城大人」而驕傲。我肯定就算當我年華老去之時,我也會自豪地對家人以及朋友說,香港城市大學是我的驕傲,而我是有份參與建立這個優越品牌的一份子。

今年是香港城市大學二十八周年校慶,我個人對大學近年的建設以及成就是十分認同的,而香港城市大學的排名在近年不斷提升。根據國際高等教育資訊機構QS公佈最新的世界大學排名榜,於亞洲及世界上云云大學排名之中,包括中、港、台二千多所大專院校、日本五百多所大學、印度五百多所大學、南韓二百多所大學,伊朗二百多所大學等等,香港城市大學及香港其他友好大學共同奪得遠低於1%以內的排名,成績絕對是驕人的。亞洲大學排名方面,香港城市大學名列第十二位,較去年上升三位。建校未滿半個世紀的新晉大學排名,香港城市大學亦位列第九,絕對屬於一個頂尖的成績。城大能夠登上世界大學排名榜的高位,作為城大人的我,亦心感欣慰。雖然排名並非衡量成功的唯一標準,但是當城市大學的名聲越來越好的時候,我相信,作為香港城市大學的學生以及校友都應該為此而感到高興。

大學現今有超過十二萬校友,人數絕對可以稱得上是比上不足比下有餘。我很希望於未來的日子,可以舉辦更多活動。最重要是,我們必須要認同自己的身份,我們是城市大學的畢業生。城大除了在專業教學及問題導向式的研究方面獲得全球高等教育界的認同外,校友的成就及參與亦會影響及幫助排名上的提升。近年來,城大於各方面的發展都一直進步,這些都叫我心感自豪。同一時間,看見許多成功的校友,不但在事業上取得卓越的成就,而且積極參與及回饋學校的行動,他們令我更有決心去凝聚更多校友參與評議會的事務。我希望在未來的日子,能夠與不同年代的校友一起參與學校的活動,向校方表達意見,令到香港城市大學能夠不斷進步,讓我們這一代的「城大人」可以為城大的歷史出一分力!

「八十後的工作」

在二零零八年畢業於香港城市大學的我,是八十後的一員。多謝大學給我的栽培,我在校內參與的活動甚多,由自發性的學生組織、到北京清華大學當交換生及斯里蘭卡的義務工作、再到成為商學院的學生代表等,加上副學士的時間,我在香港城市大學渡過了五年的時光。因此,在二零零八年五月十五日,即我大學生涯最後一科考試的翌日,我立刻上班,到今天,剛好四周年。

在這四年間,有很多不同的報導指我們這一代的年青人如何的不濟、心態如何的差及工作上如何的目中無人;究竟,這是一小撮八十後的詬病,還是一個普遍現象?我不敢莽下判斷,但因工作上的需要,令我略知一二。

因為我的工作行業比較特殊,我是在一所飲食及娛樂集團上班,經常要接觸不同層面的人;而八、九十後更是我最常與之溝通的一群。說實話,我的確在一部分年輕人身上發現報導中指出的問題,例如:遲到早退、自以為是或心態散漫等。這一眾,真的令我的工作增加不少煩惱。可是,那些情況並非八、九十後的「專利」。在招聘期間,我也不幸地碰到眼高手低、面試遲到、目標不明確或答非所問的六、七十後,這還沒有算上因履歷表都寫不好而落選的一眾。所以,那些報導指出的問題,真的只出現在八、九十後身上嗎?還是,這是香港所有「打工仔」的通病?又或只是在工作中「浮游」人士的問題?

在我這個八十後的眼裡看來,傳媒這般海量及誇張的報導不盡不實,不論那個年代的人,都有一班藏身在大機構下的枯枝,只是因為今時今日八、九十後佔了流動勞動人口的大多數,這些毛病都給放大了。很多像我公司的老闆,他們僱用的大多是和我一樣的八十後,動力充沛,適應能力高,為公司帶來了不少生氣。

我經常和與我一起畢業的同學們說,要多堅持一點,老闆總有一天會看到我們的努力及功勞。經常苦口苦面去埋怨,只會令人討厭,繼而遠之。始終,人事也有替換的一天,說不定,明天你的上司就會給你一個不錯的機會去發揮所長!

不論你是師兄姊、師弟妹,還是,跟我一樣工作了四年的同學,加油!共勉之!

香港城市大學評議會委員

More than 30 participants joined the Beijing tour. They visited a number of Chinese government units and met with their officials and had exchange of ideas on various topics. The Chinese government officials were very impressed by the achievements of CityU and our alumni, and their enthusiastic support for the University development. In addition to the visits, tour members attended a class at the Chinese Academy of Governance to exchange their views on future development of Mainland China. More than 150 alumni, guests and CityU representatives attended the Beijing Alumni Reunion organised by the Alumni Relations Office in Beijing on 26 May. Professor Way Kuo, President and University Distinguished Professor, greeted all with latest achievements and developments at the University.

Dr Lee Kai-Fu (李開復博士), recipient of CityU’s honorary doctoral degree and Chairman and CEO of Innovation Works, talked about making choices in life under the topic ‘Making a World of Difference’, also the title of his autobiography. Alumni leaders joining the reunion wished that alumni will be like dandelion seeds spreading and blooming in different corners around the world, and help the University make substantial advancements. At an earlier brainstorming session with Ms Kathy Chan, Associate Vice-President (Alumni Relations), a group of veteran alumni leaders in Beijing discussed how to extend the Mainland alumni network in support of the University. They pledged to help develop alumni networks in support of the University and wish that alumni networks in the Mainland can further blossom.

The Alumni Association of the Department of Management Sciences (MSAA) organised a wine tasting event on 30 May attracting some 30 Management Sciences alumni and their friends to join.

It was an enchanting evening filled with blitheness, gallantry and delightful conversation with friends and lovers of wine alike. Upon arrival, each guest was presented with a gift consisting of a brochure of Gigi Rosso, a splendid vineyard in Piemonte in north-western Italy. The participants were introduced to the sommeliers Signor Maurizio Rosso and Signor Armando, two prodigious and jovial messieurs….full version posted at MSAA website.

On 5 June, with the overwhelming responses from our alumni, the 《Pure Land – Inside the Mogao Grottoes at Dunhuang》animated 3D exhibition was successfully conducted. The exhibition took place at the Run Run Shaw Creative Media Centre, which is one of the landmark buildings of CityU. A group of alumni has experienced in virtual reality the magnificent Buddhist wall paintings inside Cave 220, part of the famous Mogao Grottoes at Dunhuang in Gansu province, China. They were impressed by this cultural heritage and amazed by the combination of creative media technology and the ancient artwork. Check out more here.

Supported by the Alumni Relations Office and School of Creative Media, the Eminence Society organised a guided tour for an animated 3D exhibition themed《Pure Land – Inside the Mogao Grottoes at Dunhuang》for its members on 6 June at the Run Run Shaw Creative Media Centre. The exhibition was followed by a roundtable dinner. The then Council Chairman Mr David Sun was delighted to meet with enthusiastic and supportive alumni who are not only successful in career but also dedicated to serving the community and CityU. In the sharing, Professor Way Kuo, President and University Distinguished Professor, introduced the University’s latest development and achievements including recent ranking and campus development. Some 80 alumni participants joined “A Dialogue with the President” on 20 June.  The gathering co-hosted by the Alumni Relations Office and the CityU Convocation was a platform for lively discussion between alumni and Professor Way Kuo, President and University Distinguished Professor. The President updated alumni on the latest campus developments and shared his vision on the core values of the University.  Alumni took the opportunity to invite the President to shed light on research, teaching, leadership, etc. Enthusiastic alumni also shared their suggestions on elevating the image of their alma mater through the concerted effort and network of alumni.
