Convocation will be the supporting unit for “City-Youth Empowerment Project – Career Workshop for Ethnic Minority Youth”, a social service programme organised by City-Youth Empowerment Project, Department of Applied Social Studies on 2 March at campus. Ethnic youths from a secondary school, as service recipients of the project, will receive a half-day orientation on interview skills and hands-on training by participating in mock interviews. Highlights of the workshop include a career sharing-session to be conducted by a group of alumni volunteers from different career fields to give participants a broad view of options. The programme aims to provide professional advice to ethnic youth and to help service recipients tackle challenges when pursuing their future career. A high-table dinner focusing on social skill training will also provide a great opportunity for the young students to enjoy a more interactive chat with their mentors.

Convocation Standing Committee members Mr Gabriel Ho, Mr William Khoo and Ms Esther Yip joined other volunteer alumni and supporters to cheer on some 1,000 dedicated runners of the CityU Delegation at Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon on 24 February. Vice-Chairman Mr Khoo also represented the Convocation at the flag presentation ceremony held on 19 February to gear up the runners. Check out details of the race as reported by the CityU News Centre and photo gallery.

CityU graduate Mr Francis Ngai (BA Quantitative Analysis for Business) introduced the global perspective of the development of social innovation at the Business Leader Forum of the Department of Marketing held on 6 February on campus. The talk attracted some 300 participants.

Francis, a recipient of the “Ten Outstanding Young Persons 2011”, shared his aspiration of establishing Social Ventures Hong Kong, a non-profit philanthropic organisation supporting social enterprises in Hong Kong by providing financial, intellectual and network resources.

He hopes to promote young professionals’ participation in social entrepreneurship and social innovation through the platform of Social Ventures Hong Kong.

In the talk, Francis highlights some of the projects of his organisation including “Diamond Cab” and the awarding-winning “Concert in the Dark”, which illustrate how marketing and business play a vital role in social innovation and make a difference in society.

Four of CityU’s talented alumni who double as stand-up comedians in town, namely Tim Chan (second from right), Daniel Chong (rightmost), Fab Ma (second from left) and Vivek Mahbubani (centre), were back on campus on 8 February to perform their inimitable comedy in support of a charity show.

Themed “Laugh Your Way to CityU”, the show was organised by a group of students from the Associate of Arts in Communication and Public Relations programme of the Community College, using it as a final-year project to run a public relations campaign for a real organisation.

For many in the audience this was their first opportunity to see American-style stand-up comedy – and judging by the spontaneous laughter, it was a huge success! The net profit of the show is being donated to the Hong Kong Association for Cleft Lip and Palate.
