Convocation has received a Certificate of Appreciation in recognition of its dedicated support for the City-Youth Empowerment Project (CYEP). The accolade was presented to Standing Committee member, Mr Gabriel Ho, on behalf of Convocation at the CYEP’s annual Happy Carnival held on campus on 27 April. On 2nd of March, Convocation Standing Committee members together with many fellow alumni enthusiastically supported the CYEP’s Career Workshop for Ethnic Minority Youth, and provided advices to the young participants to bolster confidence on their interview and social communication skills. Convocation constantly strives to engage in meaningful volunteer services and to bring fellow alumni together to support our community and society.

Convocation and many community members share the same aspirations to support people in need through social service.

Convocation serves as a significant link between the University and its growing band of alumni. In line with this, Convocation has actively participated in a number of strategic University initiatives and the Standing Committee members proactively served on a number of organizing committees and selection panels to channel opinions on behalf of the alumni body.

In April, Vice-Chairman Mr William Khoo attended a meeting convened by the Advisory Committee on Graduate Employment to discuss student and graduate employment issues. In addition, Convocation Chairman Miss Karmen Chan once again participated in the selection panel for the Alumni Civility Hall (Hall 3) JUMP Scholarships. The scholarships are awarded to students who have excelled in academic performance and contributed to the Alumni Civility Hall.

In May, Karmen took part in a meeting of the University’s 30th Anniversary Organizing Committee to brainstorm on the forthcoming celebrations, and she was also invited as a member of the AC3 Opening Ceremony Review Group to conduct a review on the Ceremony held on 6 May. In addition, Vice-Chairman Mr Robert Lui joined the 2013 Congregation Organizing Committee on behalf of Convocation to give feedback from the alumni perspective.

Convocation Standing Committee members had a fruitful dialogue with University Council Chairman Mr Herman Hu on 4 May. The occasion was attended by:

Convocation Chairman
Vice Chairmen
Miss Karmen Chan
Mr William Khoo
Mr Clovis Lau
Mr Robert Lui
Standing Committee members Mr Cedric Cheng
Mr Gabriel Ho
Mr James Kong
Mr Bruce Lee
Mr Douglas Wong

Members discussed and exchanged views on a number of University topics and issues. It also served as an effective communication opportunity for Convocation to channel constructive views received from the alumni to University management.

Convocation serves as a significant link to strengthen communication between the University and alumni community.

Convocation Vice-Chairman Mr Clovis Lau has enthusiastically participated in two alumni reunion activities in the Mainland recently. Following the Guangzhou business forum in March, Clovis met up with some 50 mainland alumni and friends at a networking dinner on 19 May in Xian – now one of China’s most highly populated metropolitan areas. The reunion was an important breakthrough for CityU, marking the alumni network’s first outreach activity in central-northwest China. With Convocation serving as an event partner, Clovis shared his unique experiences with fellow alumni on how to build strong ties with the University. He also joined a toast with other University representatives to commemorate the milestone event.

Warmest congratulations from the Convocation to the newly established Jockey Club Academy Hall Alumni Association!

With the concerted efforts of various alumni associations and leaders, the Convocation is confident to continue to serve and bloom the networks among the alumni community.

Around 250 players and supporters attended the “Comvita City RFC Tertiary Rugby Tournament” on 13 April. The event is an annual intercollegiate competition organised by the City Rugby Football Club, which was formed in 2000 by a group of rugby enthusiasts from CityU. Around 10 Alumni Ambassadors including Mr Him Yu, Mr Reeve Lin, Mr Rod Lai, Mr Bart Cheng and Ms Agnes Yu, helped arrange sponsorship and onsite services like refereeing at the Shek Kip Mei Sport Ground venue. Their voluntary support not only raised awareness of the sport but also showcased their caring spirit. Ms Eleanor Lee of the Alumni Relations Office helped present prize to the women’s winning team.

Twenty social work graduates who serve as Alumni Ambassadors took up a pivotal mentoring role for undergraduate students from the Department of Applied Social Studies (SS) in the “Social Work Graduate Mentors Scheme Kick-off Ceremony cum Sharing” jointly organised by the Department of SS and CityU Social Work Alumni Association. The alumni shared life and career tips with the students, who showed their appreciation for the enthusiasm of their mentors in subsequent discussions. Close to 60 students attended the event, as well as the Department’s Professor Dennis Wong who gave a welcome remark, Chairman of Social Work Alumni Association Mr Ivanhoe Ko, and Alumni Relations Manager Ms Pheony Tsang. Coordinated by Assistant Professor Mr Mak Hoi-wah, this annual event has proved to be a fruitful sharing between senior alumni and students.

At the “Orientation for Class Liaison Ambassadors” and “Special Briefing Session for Class Liaison Ambassadors” held on 22 April and 3 May respectively, over a hundred final-year class representatives committed to be Class Liaison Ambassadors under the Alumni Ambassador Scheme to help strengthen liaison between their classmates and the University. In recognition of their commitment, the Alumni Relations Office presented them with Alumni Ambassador badges.

At the first session, veteran ambassadors Ms Maxine Yao, Ms Connie Au Yeung, Mr James Zhang and Ms Janet Zhang shared their valuable experiences in serving the University and tips on how to maintain class links. While the new recruits greatly appreciated the advice, their mentors enjoyed returning to their alma mater for a meaningful cause.

Dear fellow alumni,

The University on 12 May issued an announcement to all CityU alumni that the University has promptly formed an AC3 Opening Ceremony Review Group (the “Review Group”) to review issues arising from the ceremony held on 6 May.

The chairperson of the Convocation, Miss Karmen Chan, has been appointed by the University President, Professor Way Kuo, to serve on the five-member panel of the Review Group. The Convocation expects the Review Group can achieve the following purposes:

  • to review the logistics, operation and security arrangement of the AC3 Opening ceremony;
  • to identify areas for improvement and to make recommendations in order to improve the campus management; and
  • to achieve a proper and reasonable balance among the freedom of speech, security and safety of the University.

The Convocation is committed to maintaining the transparency of the review progress and shall continue to update the alumni on the latest progress and result of the review.
